Dozens of illegal immigrants arrested, released in hours
KHOU 11 Houston ^ | April 20, 2006 | Vicente Arenas

Posted on 04/20/2006 8:37:43 AM PDT by Snickering Hound

There was a crackdown Wednesday and dozens of illegal immigrants were arrested.

Many of those same immigrants were released just hours later

It was the last thing they, and their families, expected.

"They are not criminals. All they're here for is to work for their family," said Mariz Gomez.

And that's what they were doing making wooden pallets at two different locations when federal agents swooped in and took nearly 70 suspected undocumented workers to this federal detention center in north Houston.

"Just for them to come in here and to just throw them back to where they go. That's not right for them," said Gomez.

Families 11 News spoke with feared the men mostly from Central American countries would be deported.

But that was hardly the case.

Just five hours later Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents began releasing the undocumented workers.

"I was surprised by the quick release," said a man who asked that his face not be shown. Several others made the same request.

It is not clear why these immigrants were released so quickly but workers say it may be because the 950-bed facility was severely overcrowded.

The workers say they were told the facilities were full. Sources inside the facility say the same thing and that agents have been ordered to release immigrants as soon as possible.

Some of the workers say there were other problems Wednesday.

They said computers went down and agents had to scribble information, in one case, failing to write in a court date altogether.

The men we spoke with promised to show up for their immigration hearings, still finding it hard to believe they were released so soon.

But did they also release the owners/managers of these plants? This can still work out if they swiftly prosecute the crooked businesses horing the Illegals.

undocumented worker ... a euphemism to hide what they really are, interlopers and infiltrators.

When we catch them, we should make them sing the National Anthem. If they know more than one verse, bust them as spies.

I am not anti-immigration. I am all for immigrants coming to the US, contributing and paying taxes. I am however very strongly against the creation of an illegal second class of citizen that works for pennies on the dollar at the expense of willing American workers trying to raise families.

When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial of things can become deadly projectiles.

When did Chertoff become a part of the Judiciary Branch?

It used to be called slave labor.

Sadly, that is exactly what I was thinking. I beat around the bush in my description, but that is what it is.

When you point out to a Liberal that it amounts to slave labor, they have no answer. (But they get red in the face.)

Why" Liberals support slavery.

The government has no courage to enforce the immigration laws and address this problem. Want to talk about national security? Seal the borders!

A man does not secure his home by documenting the thieves who enter, allowing them to break the rules of his home, demanding that he change to suit their needs and ultimately rob him of his property. But this is precisely what the government is allowing to happen to this country.

DAM IT! That makes me mad! Send them back home!

It only makes you mad because your expectations were dashed. You probably expected that DHS, the department in charge of deportations, would do its job.

What a quaint idea!

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I think they should deport the illegals, but not to Mexico. Send them someplace worse. Maybe then they'd get the idea not to come any more. (Just send planeloads of them to the Sunni Triangle, Syria, Kazakhstan...).

Send them to Iraq or Afghanistan, then arrest them for being on the battlefield and send them to Club Gitmo.

What happens if the Undocumented worker says he's legally here, is he afforded adjudication before deportation?

Nice red herring. Chertoff is in charge of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the agency whose job is to deport illegal aliens.

You can call them what you want but under US law they are nothing more than accused or suspect. They only become "illegal" after adjudication, if convicted.

So a bank robber, WHILE IN COMMISSION OF THE ACT, is not considered to be acting illegally until he is arrested, tried and convicted?

"They are not criminals. All they're here for is to work for their family," said Mariz Gomez.

If I were to make an illegal alien doll....Mariz would be my model...and you could just pull her string and hear her say: "We are not criminals...all we are here for is to work for our family"
