U.S. Immigration Sweep Nabs 1,000 Last Update: 4/20/2006 7:31:27 AM
United Press International
A national U.S. immigration sweep has netted more than 1,000 illegal workers and resulted in the arrests of at least nine people who employed them.
U.S. Attorney Glenn Suddaby in Albany, N.Y., said the raid focused on IFCO Systems, which is a manufacturer of wooden pallets, crates and containers. Arrests were made in nearly 40 locations including Houston, Cincinnati, Phoenix and Albany.
A customs official said federal authorities checked a sample of 5,800 IFCO employee records last year and found that 53 percent had Social Security numbers of dead people, children or individuals who did not work at IFCO.
Immigration and Customs agency chief Julie Myers said a yearlong investigation revealed that IFCO managers had induced illegal immigrants to work there, telling some of them to doctor W-2 tax forms or saying that they did not need to fill out any documentation.
The criminal complaint against the managers charges them with conspiracy to transport, harbor and employ illegal immigrants for private gain. The conspiracy charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each illegal immigrant.
It's about time ICE did something
PR move, window-dressing, public display.
I'll believe it's for real when I read about 500 ICE teams doing this on a 24 x 7 x 365 basis.
Step one, seal the boarders. Step two, crack down on employers. Step three will take care of itself.
I could be convinced otherwise if the illegals had been deported and the employers were going to spend a significant amount of time in jail, but the first didn't happen and the second will be years before a trail, appeals and punishment.
It would be well if this were a different action and not the same one of yesterday. An isolated sweep can have no overall effect, but a fresh one every day might begin to make a point.
This is a message to illegal immigrants. All the "in your face" marches and bold demands for amnesty caused a huge wave of new people sneaking across our southern border which, apparently, the powers that be are not interested in welcoming at this time. A few arrests, a few firings and "presto" the May 1 protests and boycotts begin to fall apart and {I predict} the border crossings will drop dramatically!
Such is the power, speed and accuracy of the Hispanic grapevine!
Heard from another post they did a nice little CATCH AND RELEASE on the illegals yesterday! That really pisses me off! Do they think it will appease us and we will shut up about it??? NO WAY!!
Only 12,999,000 to go...
It's a catch-and-release.
What do you have against boarders?
I used to ski, but boarding is like way cooler.
Just misspelling words other Americans won't misspell.
One repels them. As in, 'Stand by to repel boarders!'
Sadly, illegals are much more nervous about their being here than U.S. goverment officials are.
The Costa Mesa, CA city council passed an ordinance which allopowed A FEW of their cops to cooperate with INS after arresting illegal FELONS {only} starting almost TWO YEARS from now. Result: A mass exedous from the city which caused a 70% DROP in businesses catering to Hispanics!
Works like magic!
This SEEMS like a good thing, though I'm sure others have already declared it meaningless..........am I right?
A blind squirrel could find more illegals than this in five minutes.
While good, this is nothing more than public relations to protect their jobs.
People are correctly wondering why we have a whole department of well paid ICE folks who seemingly do nothing.
"allopowed" is a rarely used Spanish verb.
there was a big raid in columbus ohio yesterday too.
why I don't know because this is not a problem in columbus
I understand the illegals being a problem almost everywhere else but here they are very few.
Might be that the government has decided to drive them back to the Southwest.
