My forbears came to the United States legally, obeyed the laws, paid taxes, and in due time became citizens. My ancestors all spoke English when they arrived on these shores, but many millions did not, yet learned the language and customs of this nation and became as good a group of citizens as did my particular forbears. Furthermore, they did not demand a full panoply of cradle to grave social services. About the only thing they received from government was a public education, and a better one than what we have now. Those who came later from my ancestors, through Ellis Island, were also screened for diseases and quarantined or even returned if they were too ill. (Remember the scene in The Godfather Part II where a young Vito Corleone, just arrived from Sicily, was quarantined for several months by U.S. public health officials.) Illegal aliens are not so screened. The reappearance of certain diseases in this country, such as tuberculosis, can be blamed on these people.

It is an insult to compare the law abiding, assimilating, immigrants of old, my ancestors included, and for that matter, those who use legal means to enter America today, with the hordes of law defying people who refuse to assimilate and demand a full range of welfare services and rights that do not exist in their native lands. The most radical of them demand that the Southwest become "Atzlan", separate from the United States and united with Mexico. At the rallies, Communist and Hispanic racist banners were quite evident, unless you get your news from the MSM.

The United States is a nation, just as Mexico, Italy, Nigeria, etc. A nation is defined, in part, by physical borders. It is not a public space for everyone on the planet who wants to come here. If you don't like the idea of national sovereignty, perhaps you would be more comfortable over at DU, where your co-thinkers reside in great numbers.

This is one temporary solution...signs all across the border...might make them think twice before crossing over.
