TUCSON, Ariz. - Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will.
Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course "You can't get through to the president any other way" to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25.
Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.
"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."
Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well.
"Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border."
But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished.
Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex:
Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top.
Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside.
"It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure."
Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment.
Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot.
Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said.
"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.
He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow.
Just two months ago, I heard a drug dealer tell a judge that's why he was breaking the law. I'm glad the judge didn't think like you.
Well, it didn't take long for you to pull that out of your pioneer porkpie.....Like all liberals, when cornered by logic, spew the race cards....
Protect us from invasion... yeah right... I feel real threats from those illegal aliens... AAMOF, I am more afraid of you and your need to swear...:-)and your desire to pick a fight over a simple subject such as freedom.

Your afraid of me, yet have no fear of millions of people that you KNOW are breaking into our country? You have no idea who they are and what their views are...yet you fear me more.
You seem to have skipped many lessons on LEGAL entry into this country. It was NEVER easy to get in here. EVery person was checked for disease. People were rejected because of a simple cold. Yet, you want millions of 3rd world people to just come on in....wait until they spread their 3rd world diseases, if not already.
Might want to check your statement and think bigger.
I have to say your senators are no worse than mine. I have Jumpin Jim Jeffords (the consumate fence stratler) and leaky Leahy. God help me. Our only congessman in Vermont is Bernie Sanders, who unfortunately will be our new US Senator when Jumpin Jim retires. Sanders is an admitted socialist. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!
Good people... Do you mean the gangs who come? The drug dealers? The ones who have killed and raped Americans? Sorry but if they were such good people they would come here legally. If they have the money to spend on coyotes to bring them in they can spend it instead to get here legally. I have a child in kindergarten who is being taught spanish. When I asked why I was told because she will need it in the future. I want her to learn proper english before learning another language. I will donate to build a fence/wall. God Bless the minutemen for being there and for wanting to keep our country safe.
Thank you and your fellow minutemen.
I guess you feel like youve been dog-piled here. Just understand that if youve just signed up, and immediately take the opposite side of a heated topic of debate, youre going to look like a troll. That will attract some ad-hominem attacks. Mostly, you will find freepers willing to honestly debate and hash out a topic.
Plus, youve made a few ugly assumptions yourself:
#278 If I suggest shooting them on sight, will that get me a better tag here? #278 I have a different opinion of their worth #278 Guess that makes me a liberal cause I have compassion for them #273 must not allow themselves to become polluted by those they do not want in.
Just because we believe that a border fence is part of the solution, doesnt mean we arent compassionate, or think that immigrants are worthless human beings, or want to start shooting innocent people, or think that a lesser race is polluting our pure American society.
We get that smear all the time from liberals and DUers, and nothing could be further from the truth.
I was addressing the assumption by liberals and ILLEGAL immigration proponents that a border fence or wall is the equivalent to the Berlin wall and that all walls are automatically eeeeeevil. This point often comes from those so blinded by an overall America is the problem, blame America first attitude that they cant see the difference between a wall built by Communists and a border fence built by freedom loving Americans.
I dont think you are a liberal or pro-ILLEGAL immigration, and my comment was not directed to those who simply believe that a border fence is not the answer to the problem. Youve stated your opinion as:
#233 IMHO, I am a bit concerned about the construction of the U.S. wall resulting in misuse or presenting a bad image for the U.S. We have long been known for freedom and erecting walls does not have a freedom tag associated with it. #278 National security is truly needed, but a wall isn't the answer.
Sounds like you saw first hand the ugliness of the Berlin wall and you dont want the U.S. to be associated with that in any way. I tend to agree. Walls are ugly and its a shame we even have to talk about a fence as an option for securing the border.
But a border fence is needed and the countries that will accuse us a building Berlin Wall II are the same countries that hate us already. A similar argument was made to oppose the Iraq war. We cant determine our policy based on what other countries will think of us.
You seem to be defending the idea that a border fence and the Berlin wall are equivalent, just to bolster your opinion that a border wall isnt the answer.
#267 Come on my friend, do you really think people weren't kept out by the Berlin Wall as well. Oh... oops I forgot... the reds didn't mind anyone coming into East Germany... just so long as they didn't take anyone out...I guess when I was there in the 60s, my sight deceived me when I saw the border guards and their RIFLES TRAINED ON ME when I came to the wire...sure didn't look like they wanted me to come on in...:-)
#278 Russia's claim to fame during the Cold War was the same. For anyone who thinks they closed the borders to just keep people in, need to think why we couldn't just walk in and chat with our long lost relatives.
Of course that wall was meant to keep people from getting IN and OUT. It was meant to completely control and oppress a population. Sure they claimed it was for defense, but they are a bunch of lying communists, what else are they going to say the truth? An American border fence would not be an equivalent just because it will prevent illegals from getting IN.
Are you contradicting your own comments? #233 You are correct about the nature of the walls...There is a big difference in the purpose
[Sarcasm assumed] I see, the way to keep people free is to place a wall around them, much the same way the feudal barons did, and to make sure no one gets in to steal, rob or plunder from their castle? I do see your point. I now realize that for me to be free, I must erect a wall to keep out those who are not free. This will in deed protect my freedoms.
Fuedal barons did not erect a wall around the people to contain them, they erected a wall that the people could run to for protection from invaders and marauders. A gated community does not create a prison. Locks on my door does not create a prison cell.
[Dripping with Sarcasm] Free people, in order to keep their freedom, must not allow themselves to become polluted by those they do not want in. This pollution will ruin the pure things I have learned to treasure and keep me free.
OK this kind of pissed me off. Im not sure if you meant it this way, but this is how it sounds to me you want a fence because you cant stand the idea of all these dirty Hispanics polluting our pure American society. Thats pretty close to calling me a racist, friend.
I would like to expand and encourage LEGAL immigration of all races (properly monitored, controlled, and documented), and stop all ILLEGAL immigration. All humans are Gods children, but theyre not all Americans. It IS possible to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.
Baloney!! IMHO, if I were really free, my fear of pollution would not exist. I would welcome those who may pollute, because they can not harm me.
Uh this sounds similar to sticking your head in the sand.
My friend, it is our fear that you mistake for freedom. We don't need to imprison ourselves within a wall to be free. Yes we can come in or go out of our castle, but someday we must face those who do not dwell within. If we can not, then we are truly not free, but in a prison worse than you and I can ever imagine.
A border fence would no more imprison us than locking our doors at night would imprison us in our homes. A border fence does not make us isolationists. Facing the outside world involves fixing the illegal immigration problem, not ignoring it.
They came here with every intention of assimilating, learned to speak English, respected our laws and embraced America as their own Country.
This wave lurk in the shadows, hide their incomes under the table, anchor their babies for free entitlements, and burn our flag.
They march and protest in anger because they have to obey our laws. How dare you compare them to Ellis Island Immigrants.
The immigrants of today march to shove their roots down our throats. They don't love America... They are defiant!

"My father gave his life, making this country what it is. Murdered by the British with all of his men on the twenty fifth of July, Anno Domini, 1814. Do you think I'm going to help you befoul his legacy, by giving this country over to them, what's had no hand in the fighting for it? Why, because they come off a boat crawling with lice and begging you for soup." |
Hilarious. (Doubtless the admin. will dig up a dusty law that says you can't build a fence on an international border without govt. approval.)
And after they find that rule, they will be in the same jail cell as the poor chinese women who was just arrested.
"Since you seem to admire so much the communist building of the wall."
That is so pathetic. You're just angry they found a way around the government so you label it communist.
"Obviously you are not living in a border state....unless you are simple and just plain dirt stupid.... If you are, I sincerely wish you a speedy recovery...."
He has a New Mexico flag on his homepage. Tells you something, doesn't it?
"We welcome all except racists and bigots."
I suppose the part of my family that's related to Pancho Villa, but still believes in enforcing our borders is racists as well...apparently towards themself. No....
Simple question: Do you promote open borders or do you believe in enforcing the border and having uniform laws? If your an open border folk, why are you on a conservative forum?
Now that things have calmed down a bit... (few days later)
I guess I have alot to learn about posting in this forum :-) (grinning with some embarassment).
Sorry, but I am no Einstein and all I have is emotions to defend me in this issue. I should have been very cautious on what to say when it comes to emotion and not reason or fact. One of my close friends, who also was a great American serving in my unit, died next to me in a firefight. He was Hispanic. I met his family, which consisted of several legal and illegal aliens at the time. Those illegal wanted to be legal, but were afraid of being arrested and deported back to their home. I saw no hatred or anger within them, but a desire to work hard and have a good life. When I went home after his death, I made a special effort to get those in his family legalized. That's all I can say.
IMHO, I don't have the time or energy to be adversarial with anyone. I am someone who spent most of my life defending my country and now I am trying to make sense of why I had to do the things I did.
You know, it really doesn't make a difference what I say, because I am not in a position of power to make any effective changes anyway.
So in light of what I just learned, I will use this as learning experience and move on.
FYI, I meant no one in this forum any disrespect by my comments. But I can see you and possibly others have taken my comments as being disrepectful, so I apologize to you all for any misunderstandings.
Being a new poster, I just felt like I jumped into the wrong part of Mosul, or walked into the wrong bar room. I can feel the anger and hate and name calling in some of the comments. I was not expecting this...believe me.
I am not a troll, nor am I a liberal. Time will play this out. To those who have welcomed me, thank you.
So for now, best regards, I am out.
Thank you... for the welcome :-)
I see all your points....you are correct. I am certain that if the Mexican wall works, we will make a Canadian wall as well :-)
I won't ever know what it is like to have to try and sneak into the U.S. because I've never had to. But one thing for certain, I remember how good it felt to come back to the U.S. after being away. I actually kissed the ground when I got back on U.S. soil after my last tour.
I am sure once you have tasted freedom, the cost to get that taste back is limitless.
I'd be happy if our government would just start enforcing existing laws and stop providing taxpayer financed welfare for illegals.
But keep your eyes shut to the problem, if you choose.
heh. why they still will build a fence even when they said they wouldnt
shades of JW. Do they have common employees?
