I've noticed this happening more and more; I subscribe to a number of automated e-mail alert systems, including USGS...so I got about 3 emails on this quake when it happened this afternoon.

This quake is the second most recent listed on the USGS worldwide site, so I think people just happen to go there, see it near the top, and assume it just happened.

You rational, level headed, and logical types just have no place in an hysterics driven world. Left to their own fulminations, we could have had out and out panic in just a few more minutes.

But Nooo. You have to bust the balloon, damp the fires, and turn on the light. Party-pooper.
