FBI detains Tech student, won't say why (Pakistan Born Immigrant)
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 04/20/06 | Bill Torpy & Mike Morris

A Georgia Tech student born in Pakistan has been in federal custody for nearly a month, apparently because authorities suspect a videotape he made of a building may have been related to terrorism, his family said. Syed Haris Ahmed, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering major who had become increasingly religious in his Islamic faith, was arrested by the FBI March 23 and has been held since, his family said. ……. Ahmed's family denied that he could be involved in anything related to terrorism. He came to the United States with his family in 1997, is an American citizen and lived with his family near Dawsonville before moving to an off-campus apartment near Georgia Tech. ……………. Samia Ahmed said her brother's interest in Islam had been growing. "He's religious and liked the simple life," she said. "He wants us to abide by the rules. He isn't against anyone; he just doesn't want us to lose our faith." Lately, he was getting more interested in Islamic studies and was trying to teach himself Arabic so he could read the Koran. "He was trying to learn everything," she said. "He's still very innocent in his mind. He's still a child." ……….

Yet another Pakistani immigrant detained for being involved in terrorism.

Sad to see that exposure to the American way of life is not sufficient to obliterate a propensity towards Islamic terrorism in the case of those migrating from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

wow you can't even videotape a building anymore.

Are you sure that's all he was doing?

Not much info but you can bet there's more than a video of a building if his attorney isn't saying anything.

I sure hope so. I wonder if he went the mosque my plumber was talking about yesterday. That would be seriously ironic.

"Becoming more religious" evidentally means "becoming more murderous and hate filled".

You're right! We can not be sure what he was up to. Then again, we can not really be sure what you are up to. You might be another Timothy McVeigh. Do you own a video camera?

Thanks, that is quite an interesting read. I would be very reluctant to upset your plumber.

There have been many Americans convert to religious groups that aren't all what they've been led to believe. Jim Jones, David Koresh and Bhagwan Sri Rashneesh to name 3 groups.

I think it's possible that the radical side of the Muslim religion might not be much different, just much larger.

If he is correct that the people in this mosque all believe those things then would it be any wonder if some of them were willing become even more radical?

I'm seriously unhappy to have these kinds of attitudes in my town... and I'm a died in the wool free-speecher.

That's surprising. Most of your islamic radicals are CHEs.

I knew a student here that was Palestinian. In a speech class, he blurted out that the Jews were behind the WTC attack. He really believed it. Another student who was also Palestinian (and Christian) told him he was full of it.

This same guy threatened a Jordanian girl who had converted to Christianity by telling her she would be killed if she went back to Jordan. Come to think of it, he was an ME as well.

I took that as sarcasm

At the same time I can see how a innocent but thinking inquisitive imaginative person could well get into trouble nowdays by inference as to what he might read study analyze etc. And that inference could extend toward taking images etc of various things like bridges and buildings or even conversing/speculating to/about certain subjects.

'The need to know' may well extend into everyday civilian activities.

Why should I worry? I am one of those people!

Well, we are at war, got to remember that. I wonder just how much of the TSA obtuseness is designed into their SOP?
