The Elk membership policy states in part "To be eligible for membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, you must be a citizen of the United States over the age of 21 who believes in God." Nothing about male or female. Our Elks club is the largest in California and we accept female applicants and have a number of well respected female members. We do reject applicants both male and female however through the selection process.
The Red Green Man's Prayer:
I am a man. I can change if I have to, I guess.
Well, if you can discriminate on the basis of religion (atheists need not apply to the Elks) then you may as well discriminate on the basis of gender. As an earlier poster stated, it's a private club on private property. I'm not sure how a lack of belief in God impairs your ability to do community service activities, but hey, it's the right of free association....
Enough said. If I'm a black 56 year old male who just got out of prison after serving a 30 year sentence for rape, sodomy, and murder, can I join a the Girl Scouts in CA?
