FAIRFAX --
Democrat Harris N. Miller formally announced his candidacy Tuesday for U.S. Senate, saying it is time to overturn the "reckless policies" of President Bush and Republican Sen. George Allen of Virginia.
Kicking off a statewide campaign swing from his home turf of Fairfax County, the 54-year-old high-tech executive and former lobbyist said voters want a change from policies that have ballooned the national debt and "misled" the nation into a war in Iraq with no end in sight.
"Washington is broken," Miller told about 50 supporters who gathered at George Mason University. "It's crippled by corruption, partisanship, special-interest pandering and politicians with the wrong priorities."
But Virginia Democrats must first decide whether Miller, as a former Washington lobbyist, would be an effective messenger in a campaign to clean up what many describe as a culture of corruption on Capitol Hill in the wake of the scandal from lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
In 1995, after years as a successful businessman, Miller became president of the Information Technology Association of America, for which he was a registered lobbyist. Miller has said he did relatively little lobbying for the group and focused on issues of global competition.
In his 15-minute announcement speech, Miller made no mention of the man he is challenging for the Democratic nomination in a June 13 primary: former Navy secretary and author James Webb.

Well with fifty supporters he looks like a shoe-in.
Well with fifty supporters he looks like a shoe-in.
George Allen ping.
Here's hoping for a nasty RAT primary battle.
50 people showed up for the kick-off? Perhaps he should have gotten some of the Mason basketball players to show - then he would've had a great crowd....
What is "relatively little" mean? A scummy dim former lobbyist - that's just what we need more of in the Senate [/sarc]
I am really looking forward to hearing how these dems are going to campaign on the theme that the GOP has spent WAY too much money, and Congress needs a change to fix that...
BUT, then, in the next sentence promise all of the programs that the Dems are pushing, like socialized medicine...
I heard on Rush yesterday, that Hillary is now pushing for PAID 12 weeks family leave for sick parents, kids...etc.
And, she is pushing for more government paid "infrastructure" repair....
Yep...the dems are gonna make the deficit disappear!! LOL
Surprising. I really don't think the VA Dems were wishing for a primary here.
Allen faces only one challenger. The 2 people running in the rat primary will face each other. More media spin to dump on the GOP, but the fact is a rat primary is good for Allen.
I don't think Allen will have any problems kicking this guy's butt - but James Webb may give him a run. But so far Allen is raking in the bucks and they say he is on par with Hillary in raising money for his Senate Campaign. That should help!
Exactamondo! And we have an open primary system here in the Old Dominion so look for a lot of Republicans crossing over to vote for Miller. Personally, if it is between Allen and Webb, I'm going for Reagan's former Secretary of the Navy!
Virginia Senate:
Allen (R) Retains Big Lead
Senator George Allen (R) retains a solid lead in his bid for re-election in the fifth Rasmussen Reports election 2006 poll in Virginia.
Allen now leads businessman Harris Miller (D) 51% to 34%. He also leads former Navy secretary James Webb 50% to 30%. More...
Reagan wouldn't.
I'm sure that Webb won't vote for Harry Reid for majority leader.
is this guy or Webb a more serious contender in this race or put another way who do we want to win the primary so that Allen will crush him
Lost = lots
That's good news.
Allen, Pence, Tancredo, Rice, Kyle (spelling) are my choices for the 2008 tickets.
Why do you favor Webb?
