It's one of those "let's change a holiday to a long weekend and not break up the work week" things; like why Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday became President's Day and became a Monday.

When I was a child I liked this because of the longer weekend. As an adult, I think that it 'cheapens' the meaning of the (any) holiday. Instead of standing on its own, it becomes part of the weekend and more easily ignored. Thank GOD that Independence Day has been kept on the 4th! I'll not mention the other 2 that are not so 'Officially Adjusted' as a test of the reader's abilities.
