DODGE CITY - Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., says it's time to get tough with Japan - perhaps by restricting imports - to prod the country into reopening its borders for U.S. beef sales.
Japan, previously the largest foreign buyer of U.S. beef, closed its borders to the product following the discovery in late 2003 of a cow on U.S. soil infected with mad cow disease. The Asian country opened back up to U.S. imports late last year, but closed its borders again after the discovery of spinal material, which the nation had prohibited, in a shipment of U.S. beef.

The proposal in HR 4437 to make it a felony for undocumented immigrants to be on U.S. soil is "just not going to be in any bill," he said at a gathering of western Kansas religious leaders. "That's just a really bad idea."
More broadly, the Kansas Republican said prospects of lawmakers agreeing on an immigration reform package anytime soon remain sketchy, in part because 2006 is an election year and the topic is a lightning rod.
"What you have is just a divided country," Brownback said, lamenting the "anger and hatred" that has been injected into the debate. "There is a great cultural dispute in the country today, and you're seeing us (lawmakers) reflect it."
This guy Brownback is losing his mind. That's the ticket, screw over one of the few friends we have in the Far East. Hey Brownie, you ain't in Kansas anymore.
Oh come on Sam. Why get tough with the Japanese when we can't get tough with Mexicans?
Japan hates China and will be a valuable ally in the coming war with China. Brownback is stupid if he wants to annoy the Japanese.
No offense Brownback but I am not goign to get bent out of shape because your big money cattle rachers in Kansas are feeling the pinch over Japan refusing to buy there product.
Personally I think there are bigger fish to fry...and Japan can do as they please in that regard.
Coming war with China? Huh? That would be insane. China needs us if anything for trade. We may not need them, but they need us in the long run.
Those Japanese are building too many aircraft carriers and battleships and they've got their eyes on the Dutch East Indies too. We need to send MacArthur more B-17s, pronto!
They want a war with the US. The only reason that a war has not broken out is because they can't get their military from point A to point B. Once they can project their military, look out.
30 years too late.
How about dealing with our southern border?
Really .. how about we get tough with our ENEMIES FIRST instead of our friends.
You find it repugnant to "get tough" with Jose and Maria trekking through the Southwest on the way to Kansas to illegally take construction and waitress jobs away from Americans, then agree to give their kiddies in state tuition at Kansas colleges and universities, that the taxes of construction workers and waitresses are forced to pay, then show up in the emergency rooms requiring Spanish speaking interpreters, send their uninnoculated kids with mumps, etc. to public schools for free - and you speak of "getting tough."
Cram it buddy!
I beg to differ... what WE HAVE are WEAK Republican Senators... AFRAID to tackle REAL problems. Don't let that screen-door hit 'yer a$$ on the way to irrelevance Sammy!
You won't be attempting lame-ass jokes when there are missiles flying.
