Rumsfeld Links Generals' Flak to Resentment Over Shake-Ups

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld suggested Tuesday that recent criticism from retired senior officers stemmed from long-standing disagreements over modernizing the U.S. military, saying a series of organizational shake-ups had provoked antagonism within the armed forces.

Rumsfeld refused to directly address the attacks on his handling of the Iraq war from the retired generals, six of whom had called for him to resign, saying he wanted to "let a little time walk over it" so he could reflect on the accusations.

Instead, Rumsfeld detailed changes he had instituted since becoming Defense secretary — from canceling the Army's prized Crusader battlefield howitzer to reaching into the ranks of retired officers to select a new Army chief of staff — that had rankled military leaders, particularly in the Army.

Military people should not fear change.

Clinton had the best results with trying to change the Armed Forces with the Army. Clark and Shinseki are Clinton men.

Clintons senior generals were put out to pasture, not promoted or retired. They are very angry men. Now they are back stabbers.

Gen. Shinseki was pretty accurate on some things. He was wrong on the beret issue. But on tactics and other things he was pretty squared away.

I don't recall him every criticizing the Sec Def since retiring.

It will be interesting to hear how his critics respond.

Military people should not fear change.

Shall that be added to your library of stupid statements?

Sorry, Lancey. I misread that as "do not" fear change. My bad.

No surprise in that statement. First thought that came to mind after hearing of the first General's remarks.

Of course the General's and DeMARXocrats would not think that those of us beneath them on the importance scale could ever come up with such a conclusion on our own.

They were always back-stabbers. That is WHY they were put out to pasture!

What SecDef Rumsfeld is saying in this article -- is supported fully by what I've been hearing from our soldiers, since onset of WOT. More specifically, since the streamlining and newer "modeling" of the military has begun. He knows exactly what he's talking about. And it proves to me, absolutely, he's getting his data from the soldiers and those who are in positions of knowing this data.
