People will still purchase SUV if oil passes four bucks a gallon.

I figure at $5 a gallon, I can buy the SUV I've wanted for 20 cents on the dollar.

I concur. There are many that cannot do any math beyond the first equation.

I'm keeping my eyes out for a a very specific one-year old trade-in -- now that local gas has gone above the magic $3.00/gal.

What I save on the purchase price will be more than twice the added fuel costs over the time I drive it. Net win.
