The carriers are modestly well-armed defensively against anti-ship cruise missiles.
But EVERY destroyer-sized ship hit by even ONE weapon (even if it didn't explode) since WWII has been put out of action immediately.
That includes more than 100 destroyers, frigates, cruisers of every nation (including many dozen of ours. Every escort hit by anything has been knocked out for hours, if not permanently damaged or sunk by just ONE weapon hit.
(Out-of-action = No electric power, or no weapons control/CIC, or no propulsion. If you can't see, fight, or flight after weapon ONE hits, you're not capable of fighting weapon TWO when it arrives.)

Hmm I seem to remember this view of the Conny around '78 with a workup with her battle group pre deployment. We ran in under her "ASW" net, fired 6 slugs, threw a knuckle and beat feet out at flank, pulled into Pt. Loma before they knew what hit em. Oh and the Whinny and Moo used to be in Daly City, across from Hunter's Point. '73 time frame.
Fast Attack tough and proud of it. 594 class

Probably the best way to deal with it is active pinging from surface combatants. All the quite engines in the world won't hide you from that. That also tells the submarine right where your surface combatant is.

it's quite possible -- US military weaponry (aircraft, ships, tanks etc.) with some notable exceptions, were all built for fighting the Soviets and are of lesser use against a smaller enemy.
E.g. the warthog I think is a great weapon against the Taliban, but the F22? naah.
And, any of our real foes will not even have anything as big as these Swedish subs, they'll have tiny boats that the USNavy should be able to detect.
Don't say China would fight the US as I seriously doubt they'd be that stupid. They KNOW they have no chance against the US Navy which would eliminate China's lifeblood (it's trade), or the US Airforce and against US ground weapons, they have no chance. Against US troops, well, the Chinese are pretty tough and have home advantage. But, no, they will not be foolish enough to attack the US directly or get involved in any war directly with the US. Maybe in the 2040s or 2050s when their military may be on par with the US's, they could try something, but not earlier

I was a submarine sonar tech on the USS Glenard P. Libscomb using the BQQ-5B system. Even with the new BUSY-2 system and submarine like this is hard to find. It is quiet. They run sound silenced sterling engines generating AC electric drive with no reduction gears to make noise. They are burning hydrogen peroxide venting oxygen into the submarine allowing a combustion engine submarine to stay submerged for a long period of time. Instead of chasing these around, we should be building them.

Not hard to believe at all, as a Retired STS ( Sonar tech, Submarines) a Diesel sub on the battery is the HARDEST thing to find in the water. The purpulsion system give off no noise you can track at medium, or long range.
The only thing you can pick up is at a range way to close. They can fire a torpedo, and kill you at a range before you can hear them. The only thing you can hear is the torpedo itself, and that is a whole nother ballgame *L*.

Sobering, isn't it.
Be very glad the Iranians aren't this good.
Then again, they can “only” sink 24 tankers per sub.
Per mission.
And the oil stops after the first two tankers are hit (not even sunk) with a torpedo in the engine room/rudder/propeller.
