phonics leads to reading leads to correct spelling,
reading leads to anywhere you want to go.

As a first grade teacher, I couldn't agree more. That's why I place such importance on it because it IS. Every year I discover new phonics rules. Two of my first graders this year got up to a 6th grade reading level and all except one are above grade level. NO thanks to me, but to their parents, themselves, and PHONICS.

Thanks for being a GOOD teacher! I'll bet your kids love you.

. . . NO thanks to me. . .

As a person who has researched, chosen and implemented a good phonics program I must--as a parent and educator--completely disagree with you on this statement. My Children were once in PS, and I was ignorant enough to blame the Teachers for the mess I found myself in. I have since learned that there are many issues that have contributed to the demise of a good idea gone terribly, terribly wrong.
