Jon Garrido, a local Hispanic activist who is establishing a group in Mesa called the National Hispanic Legal Defense and Education Center, is pushing a boycott of the Childress' Buick and Kia car dealerships. Childress was a top backer of Prop. 200 and continues to be active in conservative immigration efforts.
"We're not going to shotgun anything. We're going to go in with a surgical strike," said Garrido of the boycott effort. "We're going to put this guy out of business."
Garrido is trying to get other Hispanic groups on board with his effort and is petitioning General Motors Corp. (the maker of Buick cars) to sanction Childress or face a more widespread boycott.
