Newt Gingrich: Immig Failure Could Hand Dems Congress

Newt Gingrich, the architect of the 1994 GOP Revolution, is warning that Republicans in Congress better "get their act together" and pass tough new laws against illegal immigration - or the Democrats will win back the House and Senate in November.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," the former House Speaker scorched his successors for a lack of performance across a whole range of issues, but zeroed in on what he called "the debacle two weeks ago on immigration."

"The [Senate's] McCain-Kennedy bill and the compromise that followed is so far from what the average American wants," Gingrich said, "that it raises the danger of Republican [voters] staying home."

The one-time top Republican noted that in poll after poll, the public has demanded tougher border security and reforms like a voter ID card, saying it would be easy to put Democrats on the defensive on the illegal immigration issue.

"I'd be perfectly happy for the Senate Republicans to bring up a border control bill and have Hillary and Schumer try to stop it," Gingrich told Fox.

"Sometimes incumbents forget that we were sent here to reform Washington, we were not sent here to be co-opted by Washington," he added. "For Republicans to succeed in '06 and '08 we need real change."

"The question for Republicans in the next 90 days is: Are they going to become the party of real change?" Gingrich said. "Are they going to learn some lessons and get their act together?"

I think the poll questions should be enlarged upon and more options added to get a more comprehensive sense of what options we are willing to live with. As it is, it may be mis-leading us into making some wrong decisions.

I'm reaching the point of complete frustration. Both parties are useless, and third party is not an option.

Or just have one question:

Would the immediate sealing of the borders pursuade you to continue to vote Republican?

The protection of our borders is a security issue that will be solved shortly IMHO

Has it occurred to you that the cheap labor interests who are driving the GOP Senate debate DO NOT WANT THE BORDERS SECURED AT ALL ? Read the WSJ editorial page.

Newt is most often correct and this is no exception. It is sad that he could not be elected President in a future race. Pubbies would have a President smarter than the degenerate clinton, for a change.

I work every day with illegals. I have emailed time and again to Newt's no. one in command. Newt doesn't want to talk to us who have the boots on the ground with this problem. He just wants to spout off about his own ideas and to hell with us who have to deal with the problem.

Furthermore, the guy has never gotten his hands dirty doing actual work. In fact, he is one of the thousands of D.C. wonks who dodged the draft by going to school and then moving into some administration to further avoid actually defending this country. But, he, like the others, certainly have the answers for all of us who do have caluses on our hands from doing the work that creates wealth.

It is a very simple calculation if a significant number of Republican voters stay away from voting in November, that's how. And imagine the nightmare they will have brought to life: Pelosi as head of the House, Conyers as head of the House Judiciary Committee (with impeachemtn begun immediately), and the devastation in Sbpreme Judges because of Democrap direction in the Senate will never be corrected in my lifetime!

Yeah it makes you wonder why the leader of the Republican revolution in 1994 now seems by Republican standards to be sooo far right. Is it him or is it that the Republicans have moved so far left that they have left their base behind. It is no wonder why Bush and Congress's approval ratings are in the low 30's. The 20% loss in approval comes straight from us conservatives. Without us Republicans can't win. Bush 41 left the conservatives on the road in 1992 and opened the door to a third party which handed the election to Clinton. It seems the country club REPS are going to do the same thing in 06 and 08. If the rep want to win they must have the conservative base. The DEMS need to move to the center but since the country is a center right leaning country the rep must lean to the right to continue to win elections.

Oh yeah it would be better to continue to sacrifice your beliefs so that the REP majority can continue to sell us out. IF the DEMS wins Congress Bush may remember how to use his veto pen.

The thought of Pelosi and Conyers impeaching and

CONVICTING POTUS Bush should be enough incentive for

another Republican victory.

Seriously, if the Republicans don't pass tough immigration laws, and that leads to the Democrats taking over, count on them to tear down all the border barriers, and simply open the country up to be overrun by anyone and everyone.

And this is different to the present how? Right now we have a federal government that has open borders, that does not respect its own laws it has passed yet they expect us to follow those laws. Leadership is suppose to flow from the top down not the bottom up.

My memory goes back to 1994......and Newt was an open borders guy. It's all a little too late at this point.

The borders are still drawn ~ count on the Democrats to eliminate the borders entirely.

Clinton was elected because of the failure of the Republican party to live up to Reagan's legacy. It was only in 1994 that the Contract with America tried to bring the party back to Regan's principle's. It worked in for the next 10 years but Bush second has made the same mistakes has his father. It seems genetic. Or is it that the Bush family does not believe in the Regan doctrine.
