I do agree that today's politians lack color.(issues aside)
I got hooked on politics as a kid because of how Everett Dirkson spoke and looked. Later, it was the jaw boning of Lyndon and Mr. Sam.
As a spectator sport, today's politicians are not as fun to watch (save for Sen. Byrd).
