They have "protected their retirement" by waiting until they returned to public life. Real moral courage would have been to risk their retirement and speak public.
Seems I remember Gen. John Singlaub, US Army, was forced to retire after he made some politically incorrect statements several years ago, which were in direct conflict with the administration of the time.
