TEHRAN, Iran - The president of Iran again lashed out at Israel on Friday and said it was "heading toward annihilation," just days after Tehran raised fears about its nuclear activities by saying it successfully enriched uranium for the first time.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a "permanent threat" to the Middle East that will "soon" be liberated. He also appeared to again question whether the Holocaust really happened.
"Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation," Ahmadinejad said at the opening of a conference in support of the Palestinians. "The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm."
Ahmadinejad provoked a world outcry in October when he said Israel should be "wiped off the map."
On Friday, he repeated his previous line on the Holocaust, saying: "If such a disaster is true, why should the people of this region pay the price? Why does the Palestinian nation have to be suppressed and have its land occupied?"
The land of Palestine, he said, referring to the British mandated territory that includes all of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, "will be freed soon."
He did not say how this would be achieved, but insisted to the audience of at least 900 people: "Believe that Palestine will be freed soon."
"The existence of this (Israeli) regime is a permanent threat" to the Middle East, he added. "Its existence has harmed the dignity of Islamic nations."
The three-day conference on Palestine is being attended by officials of Hamas, the ruling party in the Palestinian territories.
Iran has previously said it will give money to the Palestinian Authority to make up for the withdrawal of donations by Western nations who object to Hamas' refusal to recognize Israel and renounce violence. But no figure has been published.
On Tuesday, Ahmadinejad announced that Iran had successfully enriched uranium using a battery of 164 centrifuges, a significant step toward the large-scale production of enriched uranium required for either fueling nuclear reactors or making nuclear weapons.
The United States, France and Israel accuse Iran of using a civilian nuclear program to secretly build a weapon. Iran denies this, saying its program is confined to generating electricity.
The U.N. Security Council has given Iran until April 28 to cease enrichment. But Iran has rejected the demand.
The chief of Israeli military intelligence, Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin, was quoted Wednesday as saying Iran could develop a nuclear bomb "within three years, by the end of the decade."
Don't forget the ice cold PIVO....
We have long known that with the rise of the fundamentalist Mullah run government in Iran after the fall of the Shaw, that Iran would one day be the bomb that could light up the middle East. Our decision to invade Iraq was simply justified as being the easier of the half dozen evils, and one that could be used to lever Iran.
It's going to come down to the people of Iran to stop this madness, or the future will be very bleak for them and the rest of the Middle East.
I am unsure that they will, however it is possible that they will revolt at some point. At least I hope that to be true. There is some sense that they are beginning to see through all this hype and nationalism and starting to worry about where it will lead them.
Haven't they been saying the same since 79 ?
This is nothing but sabre-rattling by this Lunatic in Iran. He's gotta blame someone for the growing unrest of the Iranian Populace who are facing something like 25% unemployment.
The U.S. should be actively supporting the Iranian Resistance to topple this Nut and the other fanatics controlling Iran.
Not on the surface.
What it is, could be compared to a feel-good poke in our eye. They feel they are accomplishing something when they hurt our efforts in any way they can, regardless of consequences. The monetary angle gives them the little bit of justification that they need, but I suspect they will cave if and when things get real dicey.
This guy reminds me of the little yapping dog seen in some old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Invariably he receives a hard slap across the mouth by a big ol' bulldog named "Spike", sending him tumbling into a wall or such. I predict fantasy will soon meet reality in Tehran, and it won't be Israel that is annhilated...
This megalomaniac DOES think he's the second coming of something - protected by Allah - at a recent speech a man came up to him and said he had seen a 'halo' around him as he spoke. The response: "I know. I could feel it for the full 25 minutes."
Therefore, he has no qualms about delivering the Armageddon he promises 'within the next two years"
He has declared war on Israel. Israel has bought over a hundred "daisies" from us. Hey Israel. USE 'em.
WE all better realize that immigration, altho' crucial, is not the most crucial issue facing us at this time - (even if it were and we get "mad" and don't vote for our side - the dems are hardly going to make the issue any better!) - If we sulk and don't vote to keep control of the house and senate - you know they will fiddle while the world it set on fire.
WE must guard against falling into the one-issue trap
Assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat?
Excuse me, but enriching uranium while at the same time saying you are going to 'eliminate your country' is a tad more than a feel good poke in the eye.
We are looking at irrational suicide bombers with nuclear bombs.
I see the Kurds playing a big part in undermining the Iranian regime, if not an active part in targeting facilities.
Agree with the mess, but Iran is going to get the short end of the stick. I think the current bluster is a bluff.
Dude as for a bluff I hope so...
The third option is for Israel to do it soon.
At the beginning of the Iraq invasion a caller to either Rush or Sean said something very telling.
He began by reminding all that WWII was fought in different theaters...i.e the African Campaign.
The War on Terror is no different.
Then he pointed out what countries bordered Iraq and how it was better for us to fight the War with a strong military presence in the middle of those countries.
not sure we should ascribe normal thinking processes to this megalomaniacal POS. That is our greatest weakness: Assuming that their thought processes are in any way similar to civilized people. They see no reason to even pretend to justify anything they do.
they have always been inhuman fanatics - we have no way of understanding their thought processes.
Just take him at his word, face value: he had said he will bring Armageddon down on us within the next two years. He has said they will rule the world and we will be annihilated and/or subjugated. (They fully intend to bring back the Caliphate) . He has said they will wipe Israel off the face of the earth.
That's all we need to know to "understand" what they are about.
There is no diplomacy with these people whose goal is to annihilate us. "Diplomatic talks" to them is only a means to mark time for them to gain time towards their goal.
I think it's more likely that he thinks Allah has appointed him to bring back the Caliphate.
After a recent speech he said he could feel a halo around him for 25 minutes.
The man in a fanatic - he would make the muslims of the Caliphate proud.
He is delusional = the most dangerous.
WTF
Israel cannot wait to get hit first - they would be wiped up in one strike - and if they were - wanna bet on how many EU countries would join in the battle - I wouldn't want my neck to depend on it
