I had dinner a few times with Hilton Kramer and his loyal sidekick Roger Kimball back in the 90s. I've always admired Kramer for leaving the NY Times and setting up the New Criterion. His writings are brilliant. But I must say that Roger Kimball is equally good, if not better.

The only thing I miss from this article is some mention of Riverside Church, which with Marble Collegiate for me typifies the type of religious insanity into which the elite mainline churches of the time fell. They have continued to roll in that gutter ever since. You could say that, indirectly at least, Coffin is responsible for Bishop Vicky Gene Robinson of New Hampshire and what he represents. Without people like Coffin clearing his way, Robinson would not have been possible.

What I said on another thread:

NPR today presented the odious Cora Weiss reminiscing about the saintly Coffin.

Your tax dollars at work.

Kimball came to my university last year and was very impressive. The liberal professors hated him, but most of the students loved him. As far as this piece goes, Kimball hits the nail right on the head once again.
