Police charge Alabama teacher accused of student sex, murder plot

COFFEEVILLE (AP) — A Coffeeville High School teacher has been arrested and charged with having sex with at least four students and involving at least one of them in a plot to kill her husband.

The teacher, Sharon Linton Rutherford, 30, was arrested Tuesday and arraigned Wednesday in Clarke County Circuit Court.

Charges include solicitation of murder, first-degree rape, second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes.

She remained in the Clarke County Jail on Wednesday evening with bond set at $55,000.

Sheriff's detective Ron Baggette said two of the victims were under the age of 16. He said he is investigating to see if any more students have been involved.

About 110 students attend Coffeeville High School.

Rutherford was put on administrative leave from her position as an English teacher until the case is completed, Clarke County Schools Superintendent Gerald Stephens said.

The first accusation against Rutherford came in 2004, Stephens told the Press-Register in Mobile.

An unsigned letter contained accusations that she was sleeping with students. He said the school investigated and informed police, but had little to go on.

On April 5, one of the students told Principal Janice Richardson that he had slept with the teacher, according to police and Stephens.

The principal contacted Stephens, who interviewed the student and contacted authorities, Stephens said.

Authorities declined to comment on the evidence.

The teacher's husband, James Rutherford, was a physical education teacher at Coffeeville High last year, Stephens said, but took a new job in McIntosh, in southern Washington County.

The Rutherfords did not respond to a phone message left with their daughter.

Yet another one,but this time,a little murder intention thrown in for good measure.Notice the school and authorities were notified first in 2004.

And we expect what?

This teacher was taught by the same government funded, union controlled school system, just like every other semi illiterate, diversity embracing, homo tolerant, PC, multiculturally indoctrinated student

Exactly right. And, of course, who is it that is teaching American kids that there is no ultimate moral authority...? Public schools.

At least they weren't drowned by their homeschool mother. Back off on public schools. Quit stereotyping. Admit that not all public school teachers aren't out to rape and brainwash kids' minds.

Back off on public schools

Sorry, but this is a site for debate. You won't agree with everyone, but everyone will certainly listen to each other. That's the beauty of FR.

"Back off on public schools. Quit stereotyping. Admit that not all public school teachers aren't out to rape and brainwash kids' minds."

But your post clearly is an admission that it's a problem. You just don't want all schools condemned in a broad brush.

The fact is that public schools are tremendously over-funded playgrounds of liberal stupidity. There is some sort of national story almost every day where we're treated to a reminder of the depravity that is a common feature in public schools.

It's bad enough that American public education does a very poor job, on average, of providing an education to students. But they don't even seem concerned about providing a quality education, so it's no wonder we see stories like this.

Look at the issues that were passed as a "platform" by the NEA at their past year's convention. They hardly even concerned themselves with any issues involving educating kids. They're a leftist PAC, and they don't try to hide it.

Look at the violence in public schools...a kids is twice as likely to be a victim of assault in a public school than they are on the street (FBI statistic).

If you want to point the finger at home schooling because of one sick mother, then at least be mindful of the fact that the average home schooled kid is kicking the ass of his public school counterpart on standardized testing. While there are, in fact, problems that can be found in the operation any education venue, public schooling is at the bottom of the barrel in every applicable category one could imagine.

Absolutely not! Your rather pathetic attempt to bring in some deranged murderer to bolster your case is not even charmingly foolish, but it is indicative.

Public schools do a rotten job .

The typical student is barely literate, doesn't read, has, in fact, learned to fear and resent literature, has forgotten his math and science, knows little, if any, history, writes like he has been lobotomized, and you want me to back off?

But damn, are they PC!

Look in the mirror teacher! There is the problem!

Go out and change the system from top to bottom.

Don't bleat that others have correctly identified a major problem besetting out nation.

Did a little searching for more pics and found the school demographics. It's a tiny high school of only 109 students and 10 teachers.

So, you couldn't be bothered to read a positive public school thread two away from this one. In that case, I'll bring it to your attention. Care to place a similar post to that thread? No, didn't think so.

Look! Nobody's saying that it's impossible to find any good in a public school. If that's your criteria for success and excellence, then you're getting what you asked for when you see these articles about rape, violence, and academic failure in public schools.

It seems to me that people who truly care about children will be the ones who are most vocal about trying to improve the academic performance and social environment of public schools. Those who continue to defend mediocrity appear to be those who just don't care enough about kids to try to improve their chances for success.

OK, not all of them aren't. It seems just a few aren't.

But public schools ARE different than when we were children in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Sex scandal? It didn't happen.

It happens now because of the degraded morals of society today, which happens to reside at its greatest strenght in the media, schools, universities, and the left coast. And never forget the truth of what Thomas Sowell said 15 years ago -- public school educators -- today, not in the past -- come from the bottom 25% of each college graduating class. So combined low intellect, an overall liberalization toward behavior, sexually frustrated and disgruntled female teachers, and a general amorality, and this is what happens. Public school do a poorer job teaching and they are more dangerous for student and teacher alike.

Yep, she's fat and wears glasses. She's toast by our new judicial standards for child rape by a teacher/molester. The judge has to think you are too hot for jail to let you off. He may make you wear an ankle bracelet for six months...in hot pink, of course.

Of course they're not all out to do that, but an awful lot of them are, and the unions protect them with a fierce defense that would make a grizzly proud.

About 5 months ago I began reading the headlines of the predator teacher stories to Ms BE. I told her there was a story a week. To my own surprise, there are usually two or THREE of these teachers who come to light every week.

Imagine if the Catholic priest scandals had been even 10% as a bad.
