Row over 'crucifix' protest

Vienna - A row erupted on Thursday over plans by animal protectionists to symbolically "crucify" three activists with animal masks in a Good Friday protest outside Vienna's St Stephan's Cathedral.

The militant pro-animal group PETA said the activists would be suspended from crosses with crowns of thorns on their heads.

The slogan of the protest action would be "We suffer and die for your sins of nourishment."

PETA said its aim was to catch the attention of consumers who ignored the suffering of animals.

Head of Vienna's central 1st district, conservative People's Party (VP) politician Ursula Stenzel, condemned the plan.

Her office spokesperson Angelika Mayrhofer-Battlogg spoke of "mockery of a religious community on one of the most important days of the Christians".

"The action would be more blasphemy than animal protection."

The Archdiocese of Vienna said: "It's a completely unacceptable falsification of the religious dimension of Good Friday."

As well-intentioned as the animal protectionists might be, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was not suited "to transport secondary messages".

The square outside the cathedral was a "sensitive" place where not anything could be permitted to happen, it added.

If they used real nails and real thorns I could go along with this.

Aw, come on. Why not? Two out of three of the guys on Calvary were thieves.

Just remember, fellas: If you can breathe, you're not doing it right.

As well-intentioned as the animal protectionists might be...

I wish people would stop kissing these lunatics' asses. They are not a group intending to bestow or return rights to animals, they are bent on removing rights from humans. They are not well intentioned.

This is in poor taste, even for PETA.

I say let them do it. I love it when left-wing wackos put their idiocy on full display for all to see.

When have these lunatics ever done anything that was in good taste?

Bingo. Human beings are committing "sins of nourishment", i.e. morally the only way out is for the human race to be extinct. That's PETA's goal.

Butter and garlic are the right toppings, as I understand it...

This protest is stupid because the Romans did not crucify people to eat them.

If I saw a cow being crucified I would just wonder what idiot would waste good steaks. Don't torture it, just butcher it and barbecue it.

"morally the only way out is for the human race to be extinct. That's PETA's goal."

So why doesn't PETA start by doing a "Darwin" on themselves?

If you're the enlightened ones, you are exempt from all those idiotic things that you want other people to do. Kinda like the Marxist mumblings about the government fading away - only in order to do that, you've got to expand the role of government in order to make things to the point where it can fade away. But never does.

PETA doesn't want human extinction. They want power. And they've chosen their path to power. Fortunately, like so many other would-be tyrants, it merely requires the victims' willing cooperation. And, while there are is always a lunatic fringe that is willing to subject itself to almost anything, most people LIKE their medium burgers and medium rare ribeyes and their Buffalo wings and slow cooked ribs with a Tennessee sauce and....

Hmmm, nearly time to start lunch...
