Fossil Find Is Missing Link in Human Evolution, Scientists Say
National Geographic News ^ | April 13, 2006 | John Roach

Posted on 04/13/2006 12:18:35 PM PDT by Senator Bedfellow

When the famous skeleton of an early human ancestor known as Lucy was discovered in Africa in the 1970s, scientists asked: Where did she come from?

Now, fossils found in the same region are providing solid answers, researchers have announced.

Lucy is a 3.5-foot-tall (1.1-meter-tall) adult skeleton that belongs to an early human ancestor, or hominid, known as Australopithecus afarensis.

The species lived between 3 million and 3.6 million years ago and is widely considered an ancestor of modern humans.

The new fossils are from the most primitive species of Australopithecus, known as Australopithecus anamensis. The remains date to about 4.1 million years ago, according to Tim White, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

White co-directed the team that discovered the new fossils in Ethiopia (map) in a region of the Afar desert known as the Middle Awash.

The team says the newly discovered fossils are a no-longer-missing link between early and later forms of Australopithecus and to a more primitive hominid known as Ardipithecus.

"What the new discovery does is very nicely fill this gap between the earliest of the Lucy species at 3.6 million years and the older [human ancestor] Ardipithecus ramidus, which is dated at 4.4 million years," White said.

The new fossil find consists mainly of jawbone fragments, upper and lower teeth, and a thigh bone.

The fossils are described in today's issue of the journal Nature.

Found Links

According to White, the discovery supports the hypothesis that Lucy was a direct descendent of Australopithecus anamensis.

Piltdown man was definitely a hoax. It was the continued efforts of scientists that uncovered the fraud.

ID types contributed absolutely nothing.

The fraud of creationists/televangelists promising heaven in return for $$bucks is perhaps a worse fraud. There is exactly zero evidence that anyone went to "heaven", no matter what their faith-belief.

There is good reason to understand that our existence on this planet comes about via natural processes. This is neither pro-god nor anti-god. "Magic" explanations have been promoted, by those who claim tax-exemption and do no productive work.

What is your view?

I can't imagine how a creationist would argue that Piltdown is a hoax. What would their line of reasoning be?

I'm surprised they don't claim that science is covering up a true piece of killer evidence against evolution.

René Descartes, also known as Cartesius, was a noted French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. Dubbed the "Founder of Modern Philosophy" and the "Father of Modern Mathematics," he ranks as one of the most important and influential thinkers of modern times. For good or bad, much of subsequent western philosophy is a reaction to his writings, which have been closely studied from his time down to the present day. Descartes was one of the key thinkers of the Scientific Revolution in the Western World. He is also known for inventing the Cartesian coordinate system used in plane geometry and algebra.

Actually its lots of fun. We have the local coroner call on us occasionally with an interesting puzzle. Never know what he has! (Unfortunately, lots of them are smelly; we prefer nice clean bones.)

I saw the the the "Gospel of Judas" and found it interesting. Where the story glosses over the controversy is how the four books of the Gospel where selected out of over 30 gospels (the not so lucky categorized as heresy).

This subject of course is another topic altogether.

Are you going to only respond to "personal attacks" or are you going to debate the relevant points other posters made to you?

Then you better stop and put it down. You equated pygmies with baboons and gorillas. That WILL follow you around FR. :)

Well put...But still, I'll believe the bible...

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

But my point is; any 6th grader in the country can understand what God says and means here...This is elementary stuff...

and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Although God could have if He wanted, started us out as single celled bugs, but the rest of this verse wouldn't make much sense...God says He created everything that evolutionists are trying to figure out...God said He created all this stuff in 6 days...This is plain speaking stuff here...

Sure, God can do anything He wants...But He told us what he did and I believe him...

The genetic code. How can something intelligent evolve from something inert?

1. Selection
2. Mutation
3. Gene Flow
4. Genetic Drift

Do you think Jesus evolved from apes?

Look, I respect your right to believe that Jesus is the son of God. I don't, following the tenets of my faith, and I don't think theological differences over the divinity of Jesus really should have much to do with the validity of modern science.

If you do want to get into a theological argument with me, perhaps this isn't the best venue.

If God is in our image, does he get warts and pimples? Does HE have a hairy back? What does it mean to be in God's image?

"God said He created all this stuff in 6 days...This is plain speaking stuff here..."

But the evidence says it took a LOT longer...

Might have to do with the size of someones tithe (Latin root for Tax).
