I picked up on that too.
It's been a while, (thank heaven) but I thought that only a MA FID (Firearms IDentification Card) was required for carrying a "disabling spray dispenser".
Reason for issuing license: "All Lawful Purposes"...
I prefer to grab the aggressor by the balls and pull him out of the fight. Watch for the teeth when they do separate. Once you have the dog by the balls and throat...
A better guide is here:

Even still....its just a dog! The dog was biting him and the owner was not responsible enough to keep it where it should have been. Do dogs suddenly have civil rights too along with all the illegal aliens?
If the guy that got bitten had molested the dog before he shot it, being Massachusetts, they would have promoted him to cardinal and sent him to the vatican.
Ted Kennedy, AG Reilly, and all the dimocrats would have called for a time for healing and closure. I live in Mass and this place is so out of touch with the rest of the nation.
</rant off>
I suspect that this guy most likely has a history with the Police and we don't have all the information.
Sounds like he did everything right. The "at fault" here is the old lady who didn't keep her dog at home.
Heh, I live in southern IL and I've(my parents) had two dogs shot by two different neighbors while those dogs were on our property. One gave a BS explaination about disease spreading to his hogs, even though our dog never once went on his property and all his pigs are in a building. The other said that his dog and our dog got in a fight, so he shot our dog which was a miniture poodle. My mother found a stray dog while she was on her morning walk and gave it to our neighbor. Some stupid ass hunter confused it for a coyote and shot it.
Now if this happened just like the person who had his guns taken away, then I fully support him.
Everybody knows that in Mass. the only acceptable way to get rid of a problem is to drown it in the bay.
When I was growing up, (in Ohio) we had a kennel of Olde English Sheepdogs. A dog got loose one day and bit a man who threw a rock at the dog in our yard. The dog was put down in short order and a ticket was issued to my parents.
Good info...thank you for the link.
LOL ... does every thread have to be about illegal immigration?!
If the man wants to shoot the dog, that's fine with me. Other stories posted in this thread indicate the man went inside, got a gun and shot the dog from 30 feet away. That's not really my definition of self-defense, but whatever.
My point remains the same: If a couple of dogs are fighting and you get in the middle of it, you ought not to be too surprised when one or both of them take a piece out of you.
I worked with dogs for 10 years and learned this method. It works.
"My point remains the same: If a couple of dogs are fighting and you get in the middle of it, you ought not to be too surprised when one or both of them take a piece out of you."
You are suggesting that the shooter supposed to stand there and watch his own dog get attacked and possibly killed by another possibly rabid dog in his OWN yard? Sorry, If it was me, I'd off Kato and not think twice about it.
We contacted an animal behavior specialist who said that some dogs (like people) are impervious to pepper spray. The older dog ended up with a horrible disease called Myesthinia gravis (sp?) and had to be put down which was really hard. The younger dog is still with us.
LOL ... No, that's not what I'm suggesting. I suggested a broom handle or pepper spray for breaking up a dog fight. Someone else suggested grabbing the dog by the testicles. Clearly Mr. Grossman has shown us all that a gun is effective, too.
What I am saying, and have said since post #3 on this thread is: If a couple of dogs are fighting and you get in the middle of it, you ought not to be too surprised when one or both of them take a piece out of you.
But feel free to go find a dog fight to get in the middle of and let me know how it works out.
I guess you won the Alpha male position.
You're exactly right. And if the strange dog will attack a family pet in its own yard, it may very well attack children. A couple years ago my little brothers were playing with the family golden retriever in the yard, and a neighbor's half-rottweiler decided to come 'visit'. It attacked our dog, who had never been in a fight in his life and was just getting mauled, and if Dad hadn't been there and seen it, my brothers would have gone in to break things up (they were about 7 and 8 at the time). They could have been injured - our dog needed stitches and had to be shaved. The neighbors hadn't kept the dog fenced or anything, he had 'gotten away' from the owners while on a leash. Yeah. Right.
If my dad had shot that dog nobody would have any right to complain. Unless we know about this situation, I'm going to assume it was the same sort of deal - a man protecting his dog and very possibly other humans from a vicious animal who was not being properly restrained by the owner.
1. Shoot.
2. Shovel.
3. Shut up.
In this case, however, the man was bitten. A rabies test may be required by law, and certainly seems advisable, which may be one of the reasons the shooter notified the authorities.
I heard one of the owners talking with John Depetro on WRKO this morning. Clueless and completely lacking in empathy for the man who was bitten.
Water from hose sometimes works.
