Immigration 'solutions': Part II
The Washington Times ^ | April 14, 2006 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 04/13/2006 5:02:28 AM PDT by Convert from ECUSA

The massive marches organized and orchestrated by people supporting illegal immigrants have created a political problem for elected officials. Meanwhile, uncontrolled borders create a major social and security problem for the country. Whose problem are the politicians trying to solve -- their own or the nation's? If you were trying to solve the country's problem, the first order of business would be to regain control of our own borders. After trying various ways of doing that, and seeing how each one worked out, members of Congress could later turn their attention to what to do about the millions of illegal aliens already here in our midst. On the other hand, if politicians are concerned primarily with solving their own political problem -- that is, appeasing angry American citizens without risking the loss of Hispanic votes -- then a package deal on immigration legislation is the way to achieve that. The only way to avoid the loss of Hispanic votes, and the votes of others sympathetic to the cause of illegal immigrants, is to create amnesty of one sort or another under one name or another. The only way to placate angry Americans is to call this amnesty something besides amnesty -- and present it in a package deal with gestures toward controlling the border that will be called "tough," whether any of these gestures will be seriously enforced or would be effective if they were. The notion we cannot do anything about the borders until after we solve the problem of millions of illegal aliens already here is nonsense. There are many other fugitives from the law in this country and the fact we cannot find them all does not mean we should simply stop calling them fugitives and legalize them.

The big one is planned for May 1 and they have vowed to shut down our ports, railroads, schools and entire economy. If elected officials think the previous demonstrations were bad wait till May 1, this threat should be taken seriously and NO AMNESTY for the illegals who are threatening this country!

We've been asleep at the wheel for so long. When it comes down to it these people are practicing extortion and our ELECTED OFFICIALS are quaking in their boots. It pains me to say that this country has become a toilet that needs to be flushed. All of the values that I grew up with are not practiced at all today, and I'm not that old. I am so tired of getting kicked in the teeth.

I couldn't have said it better, you're exactly right.

The bottom line is that our country is being sold out from under us so that business can have cheap labor while you and I pay for their employees' medical, housing, and educational expenses. It frosts me.

We need to lengthen the time between getting a Green Card and getting full-fledged Citizenship with voting rights.
Needs to be 10 yrs if not longer. Will give more people time to assimilate and grow out of some of this immature group-think.

Sowell is perhaps my favorite conservative columnist. But I was disappointed reading this one. Where the "solution"?

The GOP has thus far flubbed this debate by letting the Dems set the terms: what enticements will we offer to get illegals to "self identify"? The more Republicans call for identifying illegals, the more sweeteners the Dems and RINOs pile on.

Republicans should step back and refocus the debate on one thing: security. Make border and immigration control the major impetus. This will get Americans behind them. Meanwhile, we can debate what to do about the ones already here. (I prefer a national ID card for LEGAL residents.) I think the GOP could win back a lot of us if they make it clear they understand Americans DON'T WANT millions of new citizens (5% of the population!) overnight.

If pubbies would concentrate on those two things, they could force the Dems into a very electorally unattractive corner.

Here's my solution.

As soon as the first Iranian nuke goes off in the US, institute a draft (WWII style escalation) of 5 million illegals and 5 million bored, liberal brainwashed college students to serve a minimum of two years in the Iranian occupation.

Kill two birds with one nuke, so to speak.

BUMP

Most of these politico's are just trying to keep their jobs and figure if they pander to the libs on this one they stay. They are not thinking of the security of the US only how many votes they can get out of this. ANY ONE WHOP VOTES FOR AMNESTY SHOULD BE KICKED OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!!!!!
