When he first rose near power, word was he "looked like" one of the terrorists who first took the embassy in the 70's. Led the people, organized the people rounding up prisoners, organized protests and rallies, etc.
Don't know if it was confirmed though that he was actually a leader then.

I had heard that, also, but didn't pursue it at the time. Anyone know if it has been confirmed that he is one and the same fellow?
