You best check the policy of the US Conference of Catholic bishops.

The US Bishops support an earned legalization program, and have, since 2003.

And John Paul II did as well.

I'll stick with Church teaching, as in the quote from the Catechism above. Hopefully, Benedict will show more common sense, and will reign in these fools (but I am not holding my breath). At the end of the day, all we can do is pray, and then leave it in the hands of God (well, we can also whine and complain a lot too!!).

The Catechism does not rule out earned legalization programs, which is why Benedict will say nothing about the US Bishops' policy.
