I have the same condition, in the same vertebrae, though mine has not yet advanced to the need for surgical intervention. I know several people who've had the procedure you describe and it is relatively minor. Their loss of range of motion after the fusion was pretty minimal. I certainly hope he makes out OK. Knowing the pain the herniation causes, I can bet that he'll be much happier after the surgery.
