Poll: Calif. voters have firm, varied views on illegal immigrants

Three quarters of California voters favor allowing some illegal immigrants to become U.S. citizens, but 60 percent support imposing stiff penalties on employers who hire undocumented workers, according to results of a new poll released Wednesday.

The telephone poll by the Field Research Corporation of San Francisco also found that 64 percent of state voters oppose letting illegal immigrants obtain California drivers licenses and 57 percent are against charging them with felonies for their unlawful presence in the country. Voters are about evenly split on building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

More than 90 percent of people surveyed said they consider immigration issues to be very important or somewhat important in this year's gubernatorial election.

The poll, conducted by telephone in English and Spanish between April 3 and 10, randomly surveyed registered voters on nine immigration reform proposals being debated at the state and federal levels.

Voters from all groups overwhelmingly supported giving illegal immigrants the opportunity to become citizens provided they remained employed, learned English and paid any back taxes or fines they owed.

Responses to most other proposals, however, varied along ethnic, political and geographical lines.

For example, 39 percent of Latinos but 60 percent of overall voters supported penalties against employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Conversely, 74 percent of Latinos but just 51 percent of overall voters favored allowing illegal immigrants who graduated from California high schools to attend colleges at in-state tuition rates.

Democrats and independent voters generally advocated more moderate positions toward illegal immigrants while Republicans favored more conservative approaches. Additionally, Southern Californians outside of Los Angeles generally favored harsher measures than voters in the nine-county San Francisco Bay area.

Researchers questioned 917 registered voters on six of the proposals, with a sampling error of 3.4 percentage points.

Of that group, 532 were surveyed on three proposals being debated by the U.S. Senate, with a sampling error rate of 4.5 percentage points.

Currently, CA school rolls contain about 45% hispanic/latino students. Whites 33% and the balance others. This is a snapshot of CA's future. Hispanics and latinos will be the majority by 2011, just over 5 years from now. The question is how these folks will vote.

I would like to see Prop 187 voted on in California again and across the country to get the real feeling of the people.

Not enough. Such people should be given the option of leaving, or staying with a felony conviction on their records. If they pass an english and US history exam and keep a spotless criminal record, I would consider expunging their record, but I'd be under no obligation to do so. If their record was expunged, they'd be given a green card and then slotted into the immigration system where they could become citizens in the same way as everyone else. If they violated any laws while they still had their record, the punishment would either be immediate deportation, or 20 years incarceration/hard labor and then deportation. They would also be required to pay a heavy fine and back taxes. Furthermore, I'd start coming down hard on employers that hire illegals. I'd also amend the Constitution to make English the official language.

None of this, however, would even be discussed until the border was secured. A two or three year moratorium, or at least very low immigration quotas for a couple of years, would also be in order.

The point to tall this would be to make sure that criminal invaders do not become citizens as easily or easier than people who immigrate legally. Illegal entry is a crime, and it should be punished.

I'm the first to admit I suck at math, but, if 3/4 wants them to become citizens...then how can 60% want to impose stiff penalities?

You are right about the future. In Georgia only half of all births are from Caucasians. The GOP is going to have to convert some people of color to its side in the next generation, or be overrun. Hopefully, the more people that work hard, save and invest (and pay taxes) will turn GOP.

Californians Support Return to Mexico

Nearly six out of 10 Californians support returning the state to Mexico, according to a new poll released by San Jose State University's Survey and Policy Research Institute.

Mark Pfalzer, of the Survey and Policy Research Institute, said the poll suggests that Californians are indeed receptive to finding ways to acquiesce to the demands of the illegal immigrants. "Although some politicians appear to be trying to perpetuate American hegemony, our survey suggests that Californians are ready to make amends for past wrongs,'' Pfalzer said.

``This poll shows that the people of California recognize that the U.S. seizure of this land from Mexico was an injustice," said Bushwah Shamsayer, director of the California Immigrant Welfare Collaborative. "The wealth of California rightfully belongs to Mexico. It should be shared equally with all Mexicans."

Shamsayer said the issue of reparations for the theft of Mexican assets will also need to be addressed.

The wealth of California rightfully belongs to Mexico.

"El Toro Poo-poo!"

So Mexico is responsible for the wealth of Hollywood's elite? Mexico is responsible for Silicon Valley too? We should invade Mexico and free its people now because pretty soon we'll be begging the rest of the USA to invade CA and return it to the United States!

This part is encouraging. More honest, legal immigrants will hopefully join the right side of this issue.
