Gee, I thought it was 'three' young men who were guilty. Now it's up to four. Why stop there? Why not nail all 48 for being on that lacrosse team.

I also could have misquoted - I was working from memory.

The woman had sex earlier, perhaps an afternoon 'delight'. Maybe she'll tell the truth, but if Jesse and Al get hold of her, probably not.

The father also said that if the Duke boys were innocent then they wouldn't need lawyers. Only guilty people need lawyers.

Well, that's definitely news...that she hadn't had sex in several weeks. How in the world did she think she'd get away with a rape charge... part of her story was that they were going to rape her with a broomstick.

These days, everyone needs a lawyer. Hell, I've got a lawyer and I haven't even been accused of anything.

These days, everyone needs a lawyer. Hell, I've got a lawyer and I haven't even been accused of anything. I agree. These boys need all the lawyers they can get, especially if they are innocent. They aren't just being accused of an assault on this stripper, but the whole town is against them!

You even see it perpetuated in cop shows - "He lawyered up" means he's guilty and the cops just have to figure out how to prosecute.

There were (allegedly) 3 rapists. Yet, 47 men have been accused of a crime. 44 of these men deserve justice. Justice delayed is justice denied.
To: NCjim
I believe the topic is really "an alleged Rape" case.
There is no evidence of rape.

Yes, that is exactly right. The boy said that the two did have a sexual encounter, and said that the girl was very drunk. Three weeks and much indoctrination later, this girl created a national firestorm by calling it "rape".
Like way too many young girls in over their heads at college, this girl felt guilt and shame(IMO), so she went to a counselor who told her that it wasn't her fault that she was a drunken mess in the boy's bed, it was rape. You seem to be from the general area, so I am surprised you don't remember this case. That boy came from a blue collar family who worked hard to put him in that Ivy League school. That girl destroyed the boy's reputation.
Aren't there "Wanted" posters up at Duke with the pictures of ALL of the lacrosse players? That is what was done to this boy in the early 90s. It is just so wrong.
As for that girl, I BLAME whoever told her that it was cool and fun to get all drunked up and hang out with the "guys". And how about those great friends of hers? They left her passed out on the floor of a male dorm room. A shining testimonial to womanhood, and all it's virtues.
Of course, this case was back in the old days. Now, you can watch your college student daughter act like a total whore for Snoop Dogg on Wild On...the parents must be so proud.

With no evidence against any of these men, all 47 deserve justice.

The boy said that the two did have a sexual encounter, and said that the girl was very drunk. Three weeks and much indoctrination later, this girl created a national firestorm by calling it "rape". I think that's fair. I am very traditional and believe in putting the onus on the man to protect a woman's ... person, not bang her when she's trashed. Date rape is rape, and drunk people can't consent. The law has to protect the innocent -- imagine a nice girl, a virgin who goes to college, isn't used to alcohol, gets drunk, doesn't consent to sex but is "date raped". She shouldn't have to forfeit her right not to be raped just because she made a mistake and had too much to drink. Sure, lots of girls go out to drink and hook up. But you can't structure the law to say any woman who drinks can be screwed by whoever wants to.
At my college the sexual violence coalition, whatever they were called, put up posters with the faces of a bunch of well-known guys, saying they were role models in treating women respectfully. Well, little did they know, at least one of the guys on the poster had a reputation as a serial date rapist.
