GOP Chiefs Don't Want Immigrants Charged

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent 29 minutes ago

The two top Republicans in Congress, confronted with internal party divisions as well as large public demonstrations, said Tuesday they intend to pass immigration legislation that does not subject illegal aliens to prosecution as felons.

A written statement by Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, did not say whether they would seek legislation subjecting illegal immigrants to misdemeanor prosecution or possibly a civil penalty such as a fine.

"It remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful presence in the United States a felony," the two men said. An estimated 11 million men, women and children are in the United States illegally.

The Republican-controlled House passed legislation late last year that is generally limited to border security measures. It makes illegal immigrants subject to felony prosecution.

Senate efforts to write a broader bill — covering border security, a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for many of the 11 million in the country illegally — are gridlocked with lawmakers on a two-week vacation.

Frist has said he intends to bring the issue back to the Senate floor, although he stopped short of a flat commitment and the prospects for passage of an election-year immigration bill are uncertain.

The late-afternoon statement by the top GOP leaders in both houses came after days of large street demonstrations by protestors opposed to criminal penalties for illegal immigrants.

Additionally, in a Washington Post-ABC News poll published during the day, only 20 percent of those questioned said they favored declaring illegal immigrants to be felons

give them all trials, appeals, litigation to the federal bench - it will take years to do anything with this method. that's why the "felon" declaration is meaningless and will be dropped. the Dems voted for it to energize folks like you, who want the republicans to over-reach on this. hispanic americans will start voting for Dems at a 75-80% clip, if this thing turns out to look like what you are advocating.

get better border security to stop new entrants, go after the employers, the landlords - people will deport themselves.

hell, we'll be lucky to even be able to stop amnesty, much less what you want.

I think it not necessary to actually enforce the immigration laws if we simply shut off ALL incentive for being here. If they can't get work, identification, or government services unless they go through the proper channels, they will simply go home. I do believe the time it takes to become legal should be sped up considerably as well.

The ONLY thing you would accomplish, besides getting a lot of people killed, would be the immediate passage of gun control legislation the likes of which you'd never imagined possible, and quite likely, a martial law lockdown "until the leaders can be rounded up."

I in no way defend his outrageous statements, but I regard your scenario as inevitable, though it will happen in slow motion, with hardly a whisper of protest from the media...

I just heard this on the radio. Another bad day for the GOP. They have now lost my vote in future elections. They are letting thieves come in and rob the true american people out of their very livelihood. Sad sad day........

if it takes dropping this amaendment to get a bill passed and a wall built, then so be it...some of you numbskulls would rather lose, have no wall built, be flooded with illegals, but still kepp 100% of your principles...real smart.

we have plenty of illegals who actually commit crimes, actual crimes (as opposed to just being here), to focus law enforcement activities on, to keep that part of the "system" engaged to help clean up this mess.

I agree, however, outrageous time beget outrageous statements. I am apparently the only one here as livid over my so called representatives, representing a foreign invading force over the overwhelming wishes of their constituents. I presume I am just so naive as to think that even if WE are wrong, their job is to do our bidding. I would gladly give up and move to another country over this issue but for the fact there is no where else to go! After we lose this country, there will never be another like it for the remainder of human history on this planet. All because we have become too politically correct to show OUR representatives why we are free and for whom they work.

Then we have already lost.

Welcome to the club. If you've been reading my posts over the past few days you'd know I've been saying this over and over.

If it's any consolation, we had a nice run of it -- better than most other peoples in the annals of history can claim. And we'd hardly be the first to have been born and raised in freedom, only to live out our lives under an occupation force. There are far worse fates that millions of others have suffered.

It sucks, it really sucks. But it doesn't suck as bad as, say, living in Poland or Czechoslovakia in the '30s and '40s. It's more like living in France during the '40s.

The same gun control laws you say would be proposed after such an event, would be another of those completely unacceptable, armed demonstration worthy events. I am thinking of my children's and grandchildrens future in a country controlled by the soon to be Hispanic political system, in the new socialist republic Amexica. Will some one give me some example of an issue YOU would be willing to bear arms for?

Sure. If our new masters come kicking my door in, cuz they need some Pesos for Tequila at three AM, I will definitely cut 'em down without an ounce of remorse.

Here's a nickel -- go buy some new boilerplate, OK?

PS: Please leave me alone until you decide to answer my question.

PPS: I understand if contractual obligations prohibit you from answering or even acknowledging it. In that case, feel free to leave me alone, period.

They've got what it takes to take what we've got.

Unfortunately, species Statesmanus, var. Americanus, has been extinct for quite some time. It's been decades since the last sighting.

Between the 20-40 million criminal aliens from Mexico already here, the 3/4 of the population there that would come here if they could, and, the birthrate in the aggregate, I think you need to rethink YOUR math -- and stop whistling past the graveyard.

there arent 40m Mexicans here!!

Mexico's fertility rate is 2.45 children per women. US hispanics is 2.2...If Mexico's birth rate were to fall 10%, problem would be solved in one generation

again Ill ask you...so you think that Mexico will have a population of only 6m in 2010???
