Brother makes 2 Fords in 9th race
Congressman's younger sibling files late, taking on own cousin
Joseph Ford Jr. and his cousin Jake aren't the Hatfields and the McCoys, but as potential Ninth District congressional opponents they aren't exactly kissing cousins either. Jake Ford shied away from kissing and telling why he waited until Thursday, the qualifying deadline, to officially enter the bloated race to succeed his older brother, U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. "There's nothing strange about it," said Jake Ford, 33, who filed to run as an independent. "You have such a crowded field in this congressional race. People exercising the power of democracy. It's a beautiful thing." Joe Ford Jr., 32, practices entertainment and contract law in California but plans to move back to his hometown to run as a Democrat. The son of Shelby County Commissioner Joe Ford, he could not be reached for comment Thursday. By the end of Thursday's filing deadline for the Aug. 3 primaries, some 245 candidates exercised the "power of democracy" and filed qualifying positions for 89 positions -- including the U.S. Senate and crowded Ninth District Congressional and Memphis Charter Commission races. Candidates have until April 13 to remove their names from the ballot.

And the dead shall rise again!!!!!!!!
This family is the black equivalent of the Kennedy's. ugh!
I mean Kennedys.
I hope these criminals cancel each other out.
Ah, not some baffling NASCAR headline.
The hope is that the GOP will nominate Derrick Bennett for the seat, and if he gets anywhere near the 40% that fellow Black GOPer Rod DeBerry received in 1994, he could win the seat in a plurality if Cohen and Ford split the 'Rat vote.

I don't see a GOP pick-up of that seat, but maybe Bennett will poll strongly enough to be a viable candidate for another office someday.
I don't think Derrick Bennett can get as high as 40% against both a white liberal Democrat and a Ford family member in a district in which President Bush was held to 30% (he could get 40%+ against one or the either, but not against both), but maybe he can get 35% and sneak into office. And even if he falls to win the general, it might set him up for a state legislative district or a county-wide run someday.
It would be idiotic for the GOP to nominate anyone other than Bennett in that black majority district.
Yeah, but I'm a homeschool mom. I have this fetish about correct grammar!
hahaha
