You may be right in saying that for a conservative evangelical Christian, one must denounce evolution.

It goes much deeper than that. Christians as a whole comprise a large part of the segment of the voting population that believe in pro-life issues, and morality issues such as marriage between one man and one woman for example. Evolutionism vs. Creationism is nothing more than something to debate about around the kitchen table with people who believe in one side over the other. It's a much smaller issue to tackle than say, the WOT, or the war on illegal immigration, the war on liberalism, judicial tyranny foisted upon by the left, abortion, and gay marriage, among other pressing issues that effect us all.

Truth be told though, most Christians will side with creationism over evolutionism. Creationism is a fact backed by theological evidence, evolutionism is a scientific theory.

When it comes to science and the Bible, it can be dangerous to assume one understands enough of either to know if they are truly in conflict.

The Earth does go around the Sun. And yet people used to be excommunicated for believing that.

I'd say the theologians didn't understand the Bible.

After all, how do you explain the universe in all its complexity and wonder to a primitive people when they haven't the educational background to understand phenomena or the vocabulary to describe phenomena.

Christ said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed," among many other parables. Does that mean the Kingdom of Heaven is a millimeter across?
