I don't think so, I would vote for the one you agree with the most in the primary.
Then you're doing in the primary the same thing you're advising others not to do in the general.
If there are three candidates in the primary, (1) your ideal conservative candidate who would have no hope in the general (2) another conservative candidate who could realistically win the general and (3) a RINO who could realistically win the general,
by voting for (1) instead of (2) you are splitting the conservative vote and helping the RINO get elected.
