Islamic or "sharia" law has "nothing to do with democracy or human rights," according to Iyad Jamal Al-Din, and mixing Islam and democracy "is like mixing Marxists and capitalists."

Yes, such refreshing candor!! His words should be quoted everywhere, but won't be because politically incorrect truths must always be suppressed. One honest man in a sea of ninnies won't have much effect - he'll probably be dead soon for his candor. The comparison with mixing Marxists and capitalists is apt, since the Islamo-fascists are if anything more ruthless and more totalitarian than many contemporary Marxists (who are bad enough).

"Yes, in fact Aristotle lived 1,000 years before the pederast Mohammed, and there was a rich a varied set of political traditions, documents, and constitutions in ancient Greece that make EVERYTHING ever done in the pathetic Muslim world look absolutely barbaric in comparison."

Right on the mark. I've always thought it was a pity that old Mo didn't come along about a nine hundred years earlier. The Romans would have handed him his head. Literally!

Although I've always supported the WOT, I've had this sick in the gut feeling for quite a while now that the Iraqi people wouldn't know what to do with freedom if they had it.

Well, remember the Prez is also a cheerleader so he is gonna provide a lot of encouragement. But ultimately, if the Iraqi people can't bring democracy to reality...at least they had their shot.

But back to the Prez and the WOT. The violence in Iraq is a damn shame but Shia and Sunni have been killing each other for centuries. The most important outcome so far is that we have Iran encircled and I would imagine we are focusing our intel resources there...on the ground and in the air.

Bush is smart but not so smart as to be dense. I have vacillated up and down on this whole thing, I somehow I expect that we can have confidence that the Prez knows the bottom line and is adjusting the strategy accordingly.

I am a staunch supporter of President Bush, and I actually think we sometimes need to mouth empty platitudes praising Islam when trying to give some of the less deranged Muslims political cover to work with us. But I certainly do not believe any of the pleasant things Pres. Bush says about the lunatic asylum that is called Islam, and I sure hope that on some level he does understand that no Muslim can be trusted to respect or care about the values that we cherish most. If he doesn't know that then he really is naive, and I'm sorry if that statement upsets you. I think George W. Bush is a truly great president, but that doesn't mean he is perfect - Abraham Lincoln and George Washington each had their flaws, too, though almost anyone would count them among our greatest presidents!!

Great. They're either sharia maniacs or Clinton voters. This does not raise my spirits at all.

Never seen any evidence to the contrary, not in the past 1000 years anyway. There were a few scientists and doctors early on who did some great work, including rediscovering Aristotle. But, I know some moslems personally who don't seem to be short anything in the intellectual department. But that's here, of course, not in the ME.

The guy is not criticizing democracy, and he is not saying democracy can't work with islam. He is basically criticizing sharia as a governing principal and is in favor of the spread of democracy in the region. This IS a stunning statement, but not because he thinks democracy can't work in islamic nations.

Were you born and raised in the USA?
Are you near any major city where illegals have been protesting against the laws in the USA, in the last week or so?
Did you stand and counter protest?
Or did you think it was too dangerous, and that you might well be physically injured?

This is the USA.
WE have not lived under the iron fist of a murderous dictator for several generations, nor have WE been subjected to the pervasive rule of noxious Islam, which is not a religion, but is a cynical, criminal bastardization of several religious theologies, mixing a putative religious flavor with thuggish communism.
With all in it's path under constant threat of death for the slightest noncompliance "offense" against the local mobster/cleric/Imam/government bureaucratic thugs.

Before you ask "those" people to stand up and be counted under immediate threat of certain death, so as to appear "worthy" to you , ask yourself why you did not daily, as a free citizen of the USA, do the incredibly less dangerous task of maintaining your own freedoms and what is left of our society?

We once had a free republic.
It is no more.

Exactly. Not really a feel-good story.

I think you need to reread the article because he most certainly said they were not compatible. If not, Bruce Tefft, the former CIA employee and Middle East expert quoted in the article certainly said as much.

He said democracy won't work with islamic law - sharia, not won't work with islam. There is a difference.

"Hmm, let us see. Explain Turkey and Indonesia. Seems the haters lose again."

Once again... how about some facts here...
Both country's you mentioned are NOT under sharia law.

Big difference.
