Democracy and Islamic Law Don't Mix, Iraqi Official Says

Despite President Bush's insistence that the Iraqi "people want there to be a democracy," a pro-American member of Iraq's new parliament claims there is "no relationship between Islam and democracy."

Islamic or "sharia" law has "nothing to do with democracy or human rights," according to Iyad Jamal Al-Din, and mixing Islam and democracy "is like mixing Marxists and capitalists." Al-Din escaped Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime in 1979 but returned and was elected to the Iraqi Parliament last Dec. 15. He addressed an April 6 luncheon sponsored by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

Al-Din is an outspoken supporter of the U.S. military's presence in Iraq but is critical of the new Iraqi Constitution, which he complained still relies too heavily on religious principles. Al-Din favors a secularized form of government.

"read or listen to Farrakhan's "

Farrakhan, like most Black "leaders" just wants never ending reparations. He (they) really does not care if it is a democracy or a dictator ship. Just send him the checks and keep them coming.

In the end it is about money (taken from someone else) for those types,

"That they are smart enough to bide their time?"

My brother married one (from bosnia)and her and her parents are liberal as can be. Remember, those balkans refugees were Clintons migrant voters.

Turkey and Indonesia are democratic to the degree that they are not Islamic.

Yes, it emanates with the idea that we are all equal before God. Islamic law clearly has a different view of us "dhimmis"

We are giving the Iraqis a chance to become enlightened and see the world in a new and mature way.

Unfortunately it is hard to be optimistic. Hope I am wrong.

Here's a table showing our casualties in Iraq. Looks pretty darn low to me.

If I had to guess, we'll be staying in Iraq as long as we want to (albeit hidden in green zones).

I've been saying this in posts on this forum for quite a while and it's gratifying that an Iraqi sees the contradiction as well. Although I've always supported the WOT, I've had this sick in the gut feeling for quite a while now that the Iraqi people wouldn't know what to do with freedom if they had it. Turns out that may well be the case.

I agree with everything he has done so far. But I suggest the "spreading liberty" thing isn't his idea (it's an afterthought and it'll never work IMHO).

However, I voted for him because he has cute daughters.

"Curious....according to the babe at the Bush presser, mohammed wrote the first constitution...."

Yeah. Its called the Koran and no one got to vote on it. Sweet... I think I'll write me a constitution like that. I just need to convince a few million ignorant and gullible fools to follow it.

BTW, I have been meaning to ask if have a Freedom 44. Great boat (though I have only seen one at a boat show).

As to the Prez, he is walking a VERY fine line. I do get frustrated with him from time to time, but he is carrying a very large and complicated load.

Hmm, let us see. Explain Turkey and Indonesia. Seems the haters lose again.

Indonesia and Turkey...you mean the countries in which freedom of religion is nonexistant? You see, any country can put on a democratic face. Even Iraq had "elections" before Saddam was overthrown.

"It was a hobby of Aristotle to collect constitutions, and each city had its own. Long before islam."

Yes, in fact Aristotle lived 1,000 years before the pederast Mohammed, and there was a rich a varied set of political traditions, documents, and constitutions in ancient Greece that make EVERYTHING ever done in the pathetic Muslim world look absolutely barbaric in comparison. All the PC-ninnies who are always trying to find items of great merit in Islam are invariably 100% ignorant of everything in ancient, medieval, and modern history.

This is not so much an attack on the president as it is the reality of the situation. It would be nice to believe that all mankind yearns to be free, but apparently there are still plenty of people out there who are content to be captives of their religion. I don't fault the president for trying. I pray Iraqis will turn away from Islam and seek the freedom of the Christianity. I'm sure the president is praying the same way. Therein lies the hope for success and I remain united with the president in that ideal.
