Arrival of aliens ousts U.S. workers
Washington Times ^ | 04-10-06 | Jerry Seper

Posted on 04/10/2006 4:31:56 AM PDT by Klickitat

An Alabama employment agency that sent 70 laborers and construction workers to job sites in that state in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina says the men were sent home after just two weeks on the job by employers who told them "the Mexicans had arrived" and were willing to work for less.

Linda Swope, who operates Complete Employment Services Inc. in Mobile, Ala., told The Washington Times last week that the workers -- whom she described as U.S. citizens, residents of Alabama and predominantly black -- had been "urgently requested" by contractors hired to rebuild and clear devastated areas of the state, but were told to leave three job sites when the foreign workers showed up.

"After Katrina, our company had 70 workers on the job the first day, but the companies decided they didn't need them anymore because the Mexicans had arrived," Mrs. Swope said. "I assure you it is not true that Americans don't want to work.

"We had been told that 270 jobs might be available, and we could have filled every one of them with men from this area, most of whom lost their jobs because of the hurricane," she said. "When we told the guys they would not be needed, they actually cried ... and we cried with them. This is a shame."

Bush has not been honest. He said he would veto campaign finance reform. Instead he signed it. He is also the first president to allow UN poll watchers in a national election. OSCE was outed on FR as a UN organization so therefore other organizations were brought into observe our elections. You can bet they were also part of the UN. Otherwise, why have foreigners observe our elections.

I can't believe America is so blind to this. If you were to take a ride to any construction site I would wager it would be staffed with south Americans not here in this country legally. Family companies that have been in the construction trades for generations have been wiped out due to this wonderful cheap labor we now have. The funny thing is, no one cared until the problem got to epidemic proportion and not enough people care even at this point. These people (Illegals) had their day in the sun. Its time for them to go. I am sure the government can come up with a cost effective way of handling this problem. (sarc)

This information should go right to Larry Kudlow. Shine the light on this. What is it someone said? It's like who's going to pick the cotton?

"BTW, I have no experience in construction but don't have the hubris to tell people who actually run construction companies or farms how to run their businesses."

Good thing!

We have LAWS for that. I know you hate laws Dane... but you really should read up on the laws pertaining to hiring illegals.

You have no valid position on these illegal threads.

This morning on FOX News they did a segment on high school dropouts in the US. They said there is a 30% dropout rate and gave lack of interest in school as the number one reason. They went on to say it is a growing crisis because there are no jobs available for Americans with no education..."due to technology."

There have always been those who are not interested in education. Before illegals began to take all of the entry level and manual labor jobs in this country many of these people ended up quite successful by working their way up the job ladder, in spite of not finishing school.

I worked for a man in Arizona years ago who had only an 8th grade education and had worked his way up in construction to the point of owning his own large construction company. That was not uncommon then. Now illegals have most entry level jobs in construction so that avenue has been lost.

Employers:
What Part of Illegal in Illegal Alien do YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

Federal Immigration and Nationality Act
Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)
"Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."
IT'S AGAINST THE LAW!!!

You can add one thing to that -- Don't depend on the taxpayers to subsidize your cheaper illegal workers and their families.

My youngest son and a lot of his friends are more than willing to work hard and want work in the construction trades and are willing to and do move around the country to get to where the jobs are. When they get there they are hired for a couple of days to a week until a mexican crew comes in and then are canned. They can no longer get into those trades in a lot of places because the damned illegals take the jobs at subsistence wages. The greedy contractors who hire the illegals certainly don't lower the prices they charge for the work and they don't do much of a job at supervising the idiots they are hiring. In new construction the work is becoming shoddier and more slipshod and is rushed through to get on to the next job. Jail and fine the employers, build the wall and throw the illegals out.

Nowhere, but there are laws that say that it is a criminal act if you hire illegals, so, stuff it.

"I believe this story and believe there are many others like it. GO AFTER THE EMPLOYERS OF ILLEGALS, they are the ones that are un-american.
"

I agree with you. The only way to really do something about the problem is to enforce the existing laws and newer tougher laws against those who employ these people. If the jobs dry up, so will the flow of illegals. Unfortunately our President has no interest in enforcing the law.

I don't care how you run your business but I WILL tell you who you can't hire when it comes to hiring criminals...

And what paved the way was the destruction of the states' educational systems by meddling of the federal government. Sonce the department of education, the quality of education in the US has plummeted, while spending has skyrocketed.

Most importantly has been the erradication of classes like civics, which taught the wonder of the United States of America. While there were certainly terrible things that have happened in our past, the USA is quite literally, "a shining city on the hill." However, if you ask a kid today, all you will hear about is slavery, imperialism, and how we do nothing but start wars. There's nothing special about America, so why should citizenship matter.

Mark

Well until there is bill that guarantees a that every native American has a right to a decent paying job, this argument is bunk.

Interesting...Because of your attitude, Democrats nationwide are coming up with laws that require employers to pay a 'living wage'...That's the result of your illegal employees...

But anyway, the Constitution provides for local, state and federal gov't to make laws...For the benefit of American CITIZENS...We have made laws that say illegals are illegal and can not be here...If they can not be here, they can not work here...

That means the Constitution guarantees the jobs in America will go to Americans, or, those legally allowed to hold those jobs...

So if anything is 'bunk', it's not this argument...

The only one that did a good job was the cabinet maker, but then he like to hunt and I could not keep him on the job.

Now that's a whole different area...You can't interfere with a man's huntin' time... :)

"The big difference is that the agency has to comply with workman's comp, unemployment insurance, and probably bonding of workers"

This is true. Plus liability, plus the cost doing a payroll, plus a profit.

In the nineties and early oughties, I hired temps thru an agency to protect myself and often my customers required "proof of insurance".

Overwhemingly, they are not good workers, often being winos or on drugs.. There is a certain %age of the workforce that is not employable and the congregate in the temp agencies. You can ocassionally find a good worker there but they are quickly removed from the pool because a great many employers hire temp to perm, which allows them to test hire a new employee.

In the DFW labor market, at that time, an illegal off the street was $8/hr and an agency temp was $13/hr.

Ya know, I just realized the ultimate fallicy with that argument, and it wasn't you....

Why do we think (optimistically) that if ~30 million people went back home (the illegals in question) that the government would reduce our tax burdens? When has government (state and fed) actually reduced the public responsibility for public education, public hospitals, law enforcement, and welfare benefits?

Even if this happened, there would still be the spending increases, (called a cut, since it wouldn't grow as much as some want) for those groups.

You can't, but nice try at a straw man and second if anything I'm a mouthpiece for people who do good things such as build buildings and grow food and don't as some do on FR consider them automatically, "evil".

Pray tell, how did we manage to build the world's greatest buildings and house our nation's families before this horde of illegals showed up? Oh, yes, does it really take 20 million Mexicans to pick tomatoes for your BLTs........by the way, in the supermarket I shopped this past weekend, the bananas, grapes and apples I purchased were all imported but must admit the strawberries were from California but 20 million Mexicans to pick them, no way!
