You are exactly right. This kind of "petition" idea serves no purpose. Frankly, I'd rather have Specter the Repub in office than Specter the Dem, but people clamoring to prove themselves the most pristine of conservatives have a way of sabotaging success.

By the way, if he is thrown out of the party, the Dems pick up a seat. Only the people of his state have a choice in whether or not he serves, and they have made that choice clear.
