Here's another factoid that supports the Spanish rather then Mexican identity.

The Californian cowboys hired to tend the Hawaiian King Kamehameha III's cattle in the 1930's described themselves as 'Espaniolo' which the locals Hawaiin-ized to 'Paniolo' as these cowboys are still known today.
