"They are also searching people they suspect to be carrying knives and seizing them.
Another horrifying knife was found at a house police were searching in Fowler Road, Radford. Officers had gone to the house using a search warrant for drugs and found the hunting knife. The owner handed it over under the amnesty."
And here are pictures of the "horrifying knives", all of a few inches long:

Blade detectors used on streets
"As well as teaching people about these dangers, we will take knives from people if we find them carrying them on the streets of our city, and we will arrest them."
It appears that the UK has gone insane. What's next? Banning martial arts classes? Teaching kids about the dangers of karate?
Next they will cut off people hands and legs, so they can't use them to harm others.
This is so insane, it's beyond belief -- searching people on the street, going into their homes and searching, taking away hunting knives, knives a couple of inches long and arresting people for owning them, this is the making of a horrible dictatorship and total control over people.
Help us rid the streets of deadly weapons
A MASSIVE campaign to take deadly knives off the streets of Coventry is being launched today. (March 27, 2006)
During the campaign police will be stopping and searching people on the streets, going into schools to talk about the dangers of knives, and carrying out sting operations at shops to ensure they are not selling knives to kids.
They would also like to make law the Coventry-pioneered voluntary knife code, where people who buy knives sign a register.
"But it is so hard to butter your toast with a fork."
"this is the making of a horrible dictatorship and total control over people."
As far as I can tell, total control and surveillance over its subjects and all aspects of their lives is indeed the domestic policy goal of the British government.
Most of the headlines on UK domestic policy that make it to FR read like a Kurt Vonnegu (sp) story. It is quite bizarre. I am just waiting for microphones in the bushes (microphones on the streets are a real proposal now).
Dear God! The sun has definitely set on the British empire.

"Cut it out, it's the law.
Possession of an offensive weapon in a public place is an arrestable offence.
An offensive weapon is any article made or adapted for use for causing injury, or intended for such use -- and that includes a knife.
Possession of a bladed weapon or sharp implement in a public place is an arrestable offence.
You can be arrested for possession of an offensive weapon on school premises.
Police officers can stop and search people in a specific area, either where a serious public order problem is likely to arise, or for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments.
Failing to submit to a search is an offense.
"I suppose rock and stick control is next."

They are way ahead of you, they are included in their illegal weapons

How long before they come for the point-ed sticks?
Where were these guys when Bernard Goetz was attacked?
Oh, that's right, across the pond.
Unreal. Doubleplusungood.
It is bad enough that the English did not learn from WWII when thy came begging to the US for arms, because they had rounded up all their rifles, but now they are giving up all their weapons as they are being invaded.
I'm a big guy.. and if I was a rapist or robber I'd write a very nice thank you letter to the police for disarming the average person.
"disarming the average person"
===
That's exactly what they are doing.
And they can stop and search anyone and if they find a "weapon" on them, they can arrest them. Arrest the "regular guy", let the criminals run free.
There is something wrong with this.
wow if you were to stab someone with that knife in post one you would almost need to get a band aid to cover the wound. I would be tempted to try to clean my fingernails with it if I owned one but i would be afraid the blade would break
