It's hard to say. Goldwater did get pretty loony in the last 10-15 years of his life.

Back in 1964, they told me that if I voted for Goldwater we'd have riots in the cities and half a million troops in Viet Nam. In 1968 I told them, "You were right, I voted for Goldwater and we've got half a million troops in Viet Nam and riots in the cities."
