Who exactly are the two conservatives? I know Santorum is one. Sorry, I will stick with my opinion.
Back in 1964, they told me that if I voted for Goldwater we'd have riots in the cities and half a million troops in Viet Nam. In 1968 I told them, "You were right, I voted for Goldwater and we've got half a million troops in Viet Nam and riots in the cities."
"The difference is that today's GOP has totally abandoned Goldwater's principles."
Don't think that would have made ANY difference to
ole Barry. He would have dug in a slugged it out.
I worked for a couple of organizations that needed
his help, organizations that didn't have a very
broad base of support. He hammered and hammered
until he got the legislation that we needed.
You know how we could repay him? We couldn't have,
and he didn't expect us to.
That's character and integrity. Wouldn't have mattered
a whit to him about whether or not the rest of the
GOP agreed with him. He'd stand there and punch until
McCain, Rangel, Spectre and every other RINO went down.
And he wouldn't have put up at all with the whiney
Republicans we have at the moment.
Goldwater was moving to the left in the 80's.
Who knows what Goldwater would do now. But after his colossal defeat in '64, he didn't run third party, stay at home, or turn into a bitter old anti-GOP poster on FreeRepublic.
He didn't turn into this either. |
The reason Goldwater could not win in 1964, is because of the Kennedy assasination. Nothing any Republican could have done would defeat Johnson.
Sure it does. The writing on the wall is different.
