Senate Republicans killed an immigration bill yesterday that they said would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens and then cast doubt on the fate of a new bill that would grant the same amnesty to a slightly smaller portion of illegals. "We've made huge progress," Majority Leader Bill Frist said of the new bill, co-sponsored by Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Mel Martinez of Florida, that would give a direct path to citizenship for workers who have resided illegally in the U.S. for five years or more. But by nightfall, hopes for a deal had dimmed considerably over Democrats' refusal to consider Republican amendments. "I believe there are some people who would rather have no bill," said Mr. Martinez, whose compromise bill had visibly thrilled Democrats earlier in the day. "We're looking like we're going to be able to dance," Minority Leader Harry Reid enthused in an impromptu morning press conference with Mr. Frist. Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and John McCain, Arizona Republican -- the co-authors of the bill that Republicans blocked yesterday -- pronounced the new compromise a victory and said in a joint statement that they are "proud" to join in support of it. But as the day wore on, staffers on Capitol Hill and lobbyists interested in the issue read through the 525 pages of legislation. By late last night, leaders on both sides of the aisle told reporters that they were highly doubtful that the Hagel-Martinez legislation would survive a vote scheduled for today. If the compromise does not garner enough votes to move forward, senators will have an opportunity to give conservatives what they've always wanted by voting on a border-security-only bill introduced last month by Mr. Frist. Unlike other Senate proposals, such a bill would meet little resistance

The candidate who does NOT support and is NOT a Transnationalist will get my vote! Anyone know of any such candidate for President???
Amen Brother
Whew (wiping sweaty brow), forget it. It got deep-sixed. It also showed who is who as for what they are in real life. That's the thing to remember about this. And McCain and Specter learn how popular they actually are.
I've notified my 2 Senators how I feel about this crap! 1 appears to be a fence sitter (Kay Bailey Hutchison) and I warned her that an aye vote would make me do everything possible to see to it she doesn't get reelected.
::applauding:: Thank you Senator Hutchison!

I hope the people in California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Arkansas, among other states, are paying attention to this.
There is hope for the Republican party!! I thought for a while that we were doomed because it seemed like that the Republicans had morphed into liberals.
Reid v. McKinney in a bicameral cage-match?
Amen....I guess my call helped :)
"Yesterday morning's vote fell 21 "ayes" shy of the 60 needed to end debate so that final debate and a vote could be held. Five Democrats -- Sens. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Byron L. Dorgan of North Dakota, Bill Nelson of Florida and Ben Nelson of Nebraska -- joined all Republicans in the filibuster."
Way to go, North Dakota- Conrad and Dorgan are a couple of DINOs I can admire, at least on this issue.
I really wonder if Frist allowed the bill to go to the floor thinking that it would be defeated and then allowing his bill to be sent to the floor.
That will certainly smack those damn smirks off of the the faces of McKennedy.
We shall see later today.
Don't forget about Emergency rooms. 15 have closed in southern CA because of them. The illegal's rule is- to get carried in by a paramedic squad. That way we are FORCED to treat them. The ones that are still open are a third-world dysfunctional toilet.
Tancredo
Tancredo is the only NON transnationalist?
Chambliss and DeWine. Two Republicans who will never see a dime from me, and whose primary opponents will always count me among their donors.
Will share my disappointment with Lautenberg and Menendez and their votes......again
That appears to be the case. At least this time the RINO vote is the one that will be split in the primaries, not the conservative one.
do what I've started to do.
Mail them a donation - one Peso.
That says it all.
If we pass a bill that says any Mexican in this country for 5 years is a citizen, why dont we just pass a law saying anyone who has served 5 years in prison should be set free and his debt to society is paid in full?
We have people in this country making our laws that dont know what ILLEGAL means.
