This is off-topic, and I apologize in advance, but I am trying to find the short piece read by one of the right-wing talk show hosts the other day. It talked about the phases a country goes through and lists six or seven, of the last ones being complacency. I can't recall for the life of me whose program it was, but I sure would like to find the text and present to lots of friends who've adopted the attitude "Don't vote, it only encourages them."
Many thanks!
It talked about the phases a country goes through and lists six or seven, of the last ones being complacency. We are a very arrogant nation. We think we live in "modern times" and the past is past. What exists today will always exist. Civilizations don't fall anymore. The way it is now, is the way it will always be. Most importantly, let people do whatever they want, as long as "nobody gets hurt".
This is a recipe for disaster. Everybody in the past thought they lived in "modern times". 250 years from now, people will be laughing at us and at our utter stupidity and hubris.

Pat Buchanan has been talking about this for well over a decade. A Republic, Not an Empire, Where the Right Went Wrong, and Death of the West all were attacked when they came out.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
- from bondage to spiritual faith;
- from spiritual faith to great courage;
- from courage to liberty;
- from liberty to abundance;
- from abundance to selfishness;
- from selfishness to complacency;
- from complacency to apathy;
- from apathy to dependency;
- from dependency back again to bondage.
