In the interview, Angelides also took aim at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, something the treasurer has done from nearly the moment Schwarzenegger took office. Angelides said the governor was incompetent and a complainer and there was nothing sincere about Schwarzenegger's attempts this year to be more bipartisan.
In the interview, Angelides said he wanted to raise income taxes on the top 1 percent of earners and close corporate loopholes.
Although he refused to give Schwarzenegger any credit for his efforts in office, Angelides acknowledged that being governor is a hard job.
"There are a lot of impediments," Angelides said. "Term limits. The two-thirds vote rule," - a reference to the requirement that the Legislature muster a two-thirds majority to pass spending measures.
He also said he supports giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, calling it an issue of public safety.
And for those who think Westly is better:
"During the debate, their positions were similar on many of the issues.
Both support an effort by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants; both want immigration reform that grants illegal immigrants a path to citizenship; and both have received endorsements from a range of Latino elected officials. "

Wonderful. Is this guy a match for Kalifornistan or what? As a native and life-long resident, I shudder. The state's inability to learn its lessons is chilling. And Schwarzenegger's wet-noodle spinelessness is disheartening.
