Girl, 5, Forced To Apologize For Hugging Classmate

" A family in Maynard is outraged after their 5-year-old daughter was forced to write a letter denouncing hugging after a classmate embraced her."

"NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that Brenda Brier and Michael Marino pulled their daughter, Savannah, out of school early Wednesday. The couple was angry after a meeting with officials at the Greenmeadow Elementary School in Maynard, where Savannah is in kindergarten."

"At issue is a hug Savannah said she got on the playground from a friend named Sophie. Savannah hugged Sophie back. The hugs resulted in Savannah having to write a letter, complete with teacher corrections, that read, "I touch Sophie because she touch me and I didn't like it because she was hugging me. I didn't like when she hugged me."

"She said, 'I'm really sad that I got in trouble for hugging,'" Brier said."

Stories like this make me wonder if we're edging closer to life as told in Ira Levin's This Perfect Day.

I'm not familiar with that work, but the more I look at the world around me, the more I'm reminded of Jules Pfeiffer's "Little Murders". Talk about "way ahead of its time", sheesh!

I only saw the film version, but it was chilling. As time goes by, it seems less and less "surreal" and more and more like a documentary.

Can't we just get rid of these liberals and be done with it? Let's just send them to Quebec.

There is nothing sweeter than seeing a spontaneous hug between two tots.

I fear for my Niece. She loves to hug people. If I don't get on my knees to hug her when we leave she gets really upset. It's just her way of saying goodbye and hello. Gads, I hope my SIL home schools her.

I guess I should have stormed the gates and demanded the principal's head when they didn't publicly tar and feather the young (6 years old? 7?) girl that cornered my son (the same age) and told him, "I going to kiss you now." And then DID! The nerve of that girl being such a ... such a ... such a little girl!!

TS
(happened a few years ago. My son didn't say anything to me. He was embarassed. Either he told his Mom or his cousin told her, I forget which. Still, to this day, some of those ornery girls have lists matching each of them to one of the eligible bachelors in the class)

Hey, call me old-fashioned, what can I say? I still find it a tad or two higher on the "bizarre-scale" for married schoolmarms to go raping little boys.

My email to the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, the Principle and Vice Principle -

(as follows)

www.thebostonchannel.com/...etail.html

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with a great sense of sadness that I reviewed the above URL. I have become convinced that our schools have ceased to be places of education but have become places of "Indoctrination" and "Compliance"....driven by attorneys who are in turn "driven" by the New Socialism - "Political Correctness".

If I were a education professional I would leave the industry as I could not abide the dehumanization of our children. I think that I would have trouble sleeping at night knowing that the "Gestapo" tactics of my administrators are in effect "abusing" our precious children.

I believe that many education professionals have sold out, betrayed the public trust and have been brainwashed by the NEA and ACLU.

I wonder how many others across America see whats happening?

"Mine was a Velvet Jones."

Perhaps it is a little early here (only half a cup of coffee so far) but what is a Velvet Jones? I didn't watch many cartoons after Scooby Do. They all sucked too much.

You've changed the topic. We are talking about the ridiculous zero tolerance nonsense that goes on against our little ones.

We are not speaking about criminal assault.

Yeah, and I can tell you what happens when a kid grows up without hugs - worth about $20,000 in shink bills. Been there, done that.

Physical contact also affects brain development - especially while they are babies, but even into mid-childhood.

Oh pshaw. We were talking about -- and I quote -- "the most bizarre action by a teacher. Bar none."

Now you have yourself a fine day. Bye!

Oh of course SNL. Velvet Jones was a riot! Small memory lapse there. After all it WAS the late 70's early 80's. I've been trying to forget that period in my life. ;D!

My personal tolerance of this sort of insanity is close to zero, which is why I could never live in such a place as this.

Remember the dad in Bradenton who full-on punched a teacher in the face for this kind of crap? That guy is a hero- and it was one of the many times I was reminded why we homeschool.

This thread has re-educated me. Now I will be more sensitive to shadows.

Perhaps I'll channel to Robert Louis Stevenson and remind him of that so perhaps he can alter his poem.

All these posts, and so few voices of reason. My general rule of thumb is that if a story sounds ludicrous, then generally it is. TDK, you hit the nail on the head.

Speaking as a parent at this school, this is a ridiculuos story that boils down to some hotheaded parents unwilling to believe that that their daughter is somewhat of a bully. The so-called "hug" was the tail end of a shoving incident where she grabbed a child half her size and lifted her off the ground. There were several students invloved in the rough play, all were reported to the teacher, and all were asked to write notes about their behavior. These parents were the only ones of the five to think this wa a media-worthy event. Speak to any other parent at this school, and they will tell you that they are horrified that this family has brought so much bad press to our little school simply because they were unable to accept the fact that their daughter had been disciplined.

They probably do have no choice but to pull their daughter from the school now... if I were them, I wouldn't want to show my face.

Back in my day, if I bought a note like that home, my parents would take away a priveledge, or send me to my room. They definitely wouldn't have called CNN.
