A wall works in some places. It worked in San Diego where previously illegals simply stormed the border crossing and overwhelmed the border guards. A wall is not a great idea for out in the desert.

A wall would not work along the Rio Grande, either. I understand that it does help in San Diego - which is great. It will at least slow them down to some extent.
