Five men accused of brewing illegal Portuguese spirits blended with deadly methanol went on trial in Sintra, near Lisbon, this week. Five Norwegians died after drinking the illegal brew, and the man who smuggled it to Norway got more than eight years in prison.
Norwegian smuggler Erik Fallo initially was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but an appeals court later cut the term to eight-and-a-half years.
The five on trial in Portugal face 25-year terms, after being indicted in what's become the biggest smuggling case in Portuguese history.
All were allegedly part of a large international network that also evaded around NOK 2 billion worth of taxes in Portugal. The most serious charges, though, involve the potentially deadly methanol that was blended with modern-day moonshine. That's led to accusations of death by poisoning.
For those who do not know, "moonshine" more properly describes alcoholic beverages slowly made with tender loving care and caresses, not with chemicals and for the mass market.
I waited all day long--this is several hours late--but there was no news from Norway until a few hours ago.
You mean, "corntop or busthead"?
Right; the stuff those guys in the back hills of West Virginia and Kentucky make; in limited quantities and with as much loving care and time as if one were raising an infant.
That is "moonshine," not these chemical drinks.
