How did protesters mobilize that fast? (Involvement of Cardinal Mahony )

Spanish-language media played key roles in the hot debate over immigration legislation

As the immigration debate heats up across the country, Spanish-language media and some of their key players are being both applauded and chastised for their roles in the process.

Last week, many people nationwide were surprised at the speed with which hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in what seemed a coordinated effort to protest what they called punitive proposed House legislation. That legislation seeks stiffer penalties for people who are in the country illegally and for those helping them.

Protesters, including students who walked out of school, claimed partial victory as a Senate committee approved a bill without those provisions.

So how did these demonstrations get mobilized?

Organizers used Spanish-language media, including television, radio, newspapers and Web sites, to keep people informed about events and marches. They are continuing to do so as the debate winds through the Senate and as organizers in North Texas are planning a march Sunday in downtown Dallas.

Even while the war on terror and in Iraq have taken center stage in the mainstream news media during the last three years, immigration reform has remained a hot topic among the Spanish-language media and their audiences.

Across the country last week, Spanish-language newspapers, from large dailies to small weeklies, have written editorials on the apparent awakening of the "sleeping giant" and have called on Congress to craft a humane immigration bill. Television programs have replayed the mass demonstrations, and talk-show callers have debated the use of the Mexican flag in the protests.

Some of the Spanish-language media's most prominent names have found themselves in the forefront of the debate.

Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, co-anchors of powerhouse Univision, dropped their usually objective delivery of the news on .

Mahoney isn't the leader of the Catholic Church - though he may wish to be. It shows a great deal of ignorance that so many on here, Catholics included, claim what Mahoney is doing is the teachings or position of the entire Church.

Couldn't be further from the truth. I have no doubts Benedict XVI will clean house even more and Mahoney will either be called to task of removed from his position.

It's like some sad schizophrenic's adaptation of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, except the villainy of the Jooooooos is now replaced by a scheming papist hiding behind every scene, pulling strings (oooooooh!).

For those of us who have had to weather critisism against some of our leaders, because of a handful of jackasses, it's time to take action. I'm not exactly what kind of action, or who to contact, but this has to stop.

Your words to God's ear. There could have been fatalities, as the kids out here swarmed a very busy fwy(I-110). No excuse for this!

The only official Roman Catholic teaching on the subject is in the catechism at 2241:

2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

It seems Roger Cardinal Mahoney loves paragraph one, but has taken Witeout™ to paragraph two.

I also found via a search on the Vatican website a statement issued by John Paul II for migration day of 1996. He is very clear, nations have the right to secure their borders and to stop illegal immigration into their countries.

He goes so far as saying when an illegal can not become a citizen because of laws or other considerations it is the Churchs job to "ask them to leave". Completely different from what Mahoney is doing/saying.

http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/messages/migration/documents/hf_jp-ii_mes_25071995_undocumented_migrants_en.html

Highlights

"Illegal immigration should be prevented, but it is also essential to combat vigorously the criminal activities which exploit illegal immigrants. The most appropriate choice, which will yield consistent and long-lasting results is that of international co-operation which aims to foster political stability and to eliminate underdevelopment"

"4. When no solution is foreseen, these same institutions should direct those they are helping, perhaps also providing them with material assistance, either to seek acceptance in other countries, or to return to their own country"

No excuse whatsoever. Also, considering how many student didnt' even understand what they were protesting about - it's even more unexcusable.

Mahoney has twisted the immigration debate, has flat out lied about proposed bills and in the end should be held accountable for his actions.

There is nothing in your statement or the Catechism of the
Catholic Church that would condemn building one of these babies:

Bingo - or nothing in the Catechism or the statement that would prevent the US from kicking out the illegals currently in our country.

It shows a great deal of ignorance that so many on here, Catholics included, claim what Mahoney is doing is the teachings or position of the entire Church.

Mahoney's position reflects that of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops:

In their 2003 pastoral letter, Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope, the U.S. Catholic bishops called for a series of reforms to the broken U.S. immigration system, including: 1) policies to address the root causes of migration, such as global poverty; 2) reform of our legal immigration system, including an earned legalization program, a temporary worker program with appropriate worker protections, and reductions in waiting times in family-based immigration categories; and 3) restoration of due process for immigrants.

I have no doubts Benedict XVI will clean house even more and Mahoney will either be called to task of removed from his position.

Mahoney has five years until he's 75, usual retirement age for bishops. Unless something extraordinary happens, there's no reason to assume he won't be Archbishop of LA for at least five years, and possibly longer.

Since when does the Church have the right to encourage children to be disobedient?

She doesn't, and neither does Mahoney. Thanks be to God, I'm not in his diocese.

>>!Viva Christo Rey!

Do you know what that means? <<

Oooh! Oooh! Pick me, pick me!! It's the response of the Cristeros (Catholic counter-revolutionaries) during Mexico's anti-clerical revolution of the 20's.

I was introduced to it by The Fourth Gift, by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino. The dedication page reads "The fourth gift of the Holy Spirit is fortitude." As a Southern Baptist (at that time), I had no clue what that meant. I believe she's the same Elizabeth Borton that wrote Pollyanna's Castle in Mexico, but can't prove it. The book is WAY out of print, but if you see a copy anywhere, pounce on it.

Is that picture part of what we already have, and we can just keep hitting copy/paste all along the border? Please say yes.

I'm sure there are plenty of folks on this forum who know about the Cristeros, and the persecution of the Catholic Church in Latin America.

I suspect that our friend doesn't.

Ramos, who was born in Mexico and delivers the news from Miami, said he was an immigrant and was contributing to the country, and asked Dobbs, "What's wrong with people like me, Lou?"

I guess there wasn't enough time in the segment to answer Ramos - Lou will have to devote an entire program to do the question justice.

Ramos is a whiny Mexican who hasn't even bothered to become a US citizen, and he's not representative of the migrants who are coming across the border. He's a weasel to make that comparison, as though the rich Miami enclave where he lives were in any way comparative to the conditions of the average illegal.

Do you think we'd have to trade Pollard for them? If so, no deal.

I'm mad at the Israelis anyway - they should have put Bethlehem on their side of the wall.
