That's true for African Americans from many northern cities, not just New York City. The movement of middle class African Americans back to the South (especially the Atlanta area) has been going on for the last decade or so. The trend is probably more acute in New York because, as others have said, many middle class New Yorkers, black and white, are being priced out of the housing market.
